Resumen del Editor

The current tour of duty for Leftenant Trig Bioblast, Second Shaman of the OCSS Skull Crusher, had been completely routine, and, disappointingly, uneventful. The days of revolution were a distant five hundred galactic years in the past.

Today, there was very little in the cluster that could significantly challenge an Oak Clan Star Ship, nor, admittedly any other clan cruiser in the horde. The last battle that had actually required the Skull Crusher to marshal her full might had been with a squid ship, nearly four GY ago, well before Trig had joined the ship.

While on duty, Trig had received an Automated AEthereal Message from the OCSS Bone Wracker: a Call-To-Arms, an extremely rare type of message that was only issued when a ship encountered a situation that was beyond the capabilities of a single OCSS.

Of course, the truly exciting news was that his superior, Thargus, was temporarily incapacitated, making Trig the acting First Shaman, giving him a front row seat to the investigation as part of the First Away Team. It appeared that, at long last, his on-duty life would get exciting enough to distract him from his off-duty life.

About two Galactic Weeks ago, a long dormant shaman stone passed down his family tree for thousands of years had suddenly become active, much to Trig's surprise. Upon examining the stone, he'd discovered that it was linked to another stone—in a different universe, beyond the Astral Plane. And the people who had activated the stone? Well, they were an ancient army of mythological immortal warriors that his grandfather claimed had once ruled a vast Multiversal Empire, but then vanished for no known reason.

A worthy adversary for their ship and a heated battle or two should serve to keep his mind off his mythological being problem.

Fun Addition to the Multiverse

Initially I held off listening to the new story. I really wanted a continuation of Thomas and friends but I'm glad I added it to the library. It's a fun expansion on the original story and partial continuation. Narration was well done, other than the frustrating translocuted stuff.

A Fun Story! -- Heroic Orcs, Sci Fi, and Mythos

This book doesn't feel like Demons of Astlan per se. In this one we don't really have different factions and perspectives, or play with human foibles. The charm in this book is more from the standpoint of a mystery, combat between capital ships, exploration, and a strange new world or two -- all from the perspective of a particular group of (kinda) 40K style spacefaring orcs.

This book starts slow but manages to move along with reasonably good humor, an adequate concept of how to mix science fiction with fantasy, and a series of quests.

It's good!

Excellent Book

My reason for leaving a review is entirely self-serving. I like this series and want another book sometime soon. Buy it. Buy it now.

An EXCELLENT addition to the multiverse!!!

Once again I'm absolutely blown away by the narration and story of Stephen and Langland!! I was hooked from the start and enjoyed all of the new faces as well as cameos from the main series. While prior knowledge of the multiverse isn't needed, some aspects would be hard to follow without it, which is why it was so fun to re-discover with a new perspective from characters that would be just as confused as someone thrown into a multiversal war between enemies that have been fighting for eons! It was so nice to hear from my favorite characters and get to meet new ones. This is obviously going to be worthy of stand alone praise as it's own series but seeing the multiverse expanded and built upon was a thrilling ride!! I was enraptured by every new revelation in this book and I was sad to see it end but what an end it was!! The last lines of this book will have your shivering in anticipation for the next one!

It’s way too quiet and slow to start

I listen to headphones at work and can barely hear the audio when it’s turned almost all the way up over the noise.

I’ve checked other audiobooks and headphones to make sure it’s not just my headphones going bad.

It’s only this audiobook that is so quiet.

Also I am only 4 hours in and honestly it’s been a slog already just to get here. Like 50% of the book is listing long orc names or using and explaining various abbreviation regarding distance and time the spaceship uses.

The names being long is fine as honestly the orca put a lot of import on names and clan history. However the myriad of “galactic” time and distance measurements was a bit much and honestly not really important. Also it’s a bit tough to keep all the abbreviated words and phrases in mind especially if you aren’t listening to the whole thing in one sitting.

I am now about half way through and with no spoilers I found something that is driving me crazy. As we all know from other Demons if Astlan books shamans talk to each other through the use of astral projection. Not a surprise that shamans would use it for instant communication along far distances. As such when they bring in a high up shaman to a debriefing I wasn’t surprised.

However they note most people can’t see the astral projections except for shamans. Again makes sense and I think they mentioned it in other books so the shamans bring a “interlocketer” to translate what the astral projections say to everyone else in the meeting. Again logical and makes sense. However the author felt the need to state what the shaman says and then have the translator repeat it every single time they talk…. I mean we could just be told what the shaman or what the translator says but instead we get to listen to everything the shamans say twice each and every single time.

*Potential spoiler ahead regarding Lord Tommus*

Also so far Tom and his buddies have only shown up for like a five minute period. The story centers around a young shaman who constantly explains that he can’t bring any of the D’’Orcs in on the various situations for… reasons I guess?

I mean every other orc clan we have met state the D’Orcs are basically celebrities among the Orc community. I mean they view them as the strongest and bravest warriors who were elevated upon death. However for some reason this “local verse” would view them as invaders or something.

*End spoilers*

I will say the story has gotten a bit better around the 9 hour mark but still I have to be honest I’m not super excited to see if there will be more books in this side series. I definetly am still excited for the next demons of Astlan story however this one is just too dry for my tastes. The humor from previous books is missing, the action and intrigue is mostly minor things like short battles followed by tons of talking about plans for battles. But the single worst thing is, like I mentioned earlier, all the abbreviations for time and space.

I know that it makes no sense for something so “minor” like that to be a big deal but it very much is. You can’t go like 3 sentences without hearing the abbreviations for things like Galactic Light Year (GLY), Galactic Week (GK), Galactic Month (GM), etc. It is a bit tough to keep up with so many abbreviations while not reading a physical copy as the abbreviations are thrown out rapid fire while they narrate the story.

*Edit added in during the last 4 hours*

I had to go back and raise the is to four stars here. While it was very slow to ramp up it did become quite interesting. Still find the abbreviations to be a bit annoying but like I said it is worth listening too. I guess I shouldn’t have doubted this author after his other books.
