The world calls the Falkland Islands harsh and isolated. The Carters called it home....
In 1982, war brought The Falkland Islands into the spotlight. When Jennifer and her family put down roots in an unspoiled community on West Falkland, they can’t help but see the unruly climate and the close proximity to a frozen wasteland. How could a place like this be worth fighting for?
The Carters quickly learn that the Falklands way of life is friendliness and self-sufficiency. Their new life becomes one of abundant wildlife and growing their own food, but it never strays from the island’s true British identity.
Part homesteading, part off-the-grid, and all charm, this loving testimony to the resilient people of the islands will have you adding the Falklands to your bucket list in an instant.
My Falkland Islands Life is the story of one family’s adventure in a sub-Antarctic British territory 8,000 miles from the United Kingdom. The Falklands are situated in the South Atlantic, to the east of Argentina, South America. Whether you live on the islands, plan to travel there, or enjoy a fascinating travelogue, you’ll love Jen Carter’s engaging memoir of a charming life at the bottom of the world.

Would have been better if it had a female narrator, because it is written and told by a women.

There's a bit of repetition--for instance, we're told several times that the Falkland Islanders are self-sufficient, as they must be, cut off from the larger world in the last of the pre-internet days. For the most part, though, I found myself wanting more--more details of Christmas spent in the Southern Hemisphere, where it's summer, more details of what Jen and her family did for fun so far away from town ("town" in this case being Stanley).
I struggled a bit with how to rate the narrator. David Ayers did a fine job, and his British accent is appropriate for a memoir set in this British territory--if only the memoirist had been a man. But the author is a woman, and she tells her story in the first person. It's jarring to hear a man recounting lines like "When I discovered I was pregnant with our second child..." I can't help wondering why the author didn't choose a woman for the job.
All in all, though, this is a vividly described look at a land few of us will ever get to see. It makes me doubly impatient for my own visit.

This Book is a great way to learn about this unusual place and is a interesting way to learn about the people and the place itself.
The Narrator had a good performance.

What a mystery and adventure it would be to live a completely different lifestyle for a time, and really have to WORK for everything you have.

An isolated, but very quaint place

Welcome to living on one of the smallish islands off the east coast of Argentina in the Atlantic and home to high winds, penguins, and hardy resourceful people. The author, her husband and small son transferred from England and lived there for two years, enjoyed making friends, living a totally different lifestyle, and learning so many new things. This small book is a testament to the people who live there and a fine way for the rest of us to appreciate the islands and those people. Set in the mid 1980's, there is a lovely postscript as an update.
David Ayers did an amazing job of narration!
