Resumen del Editor

From the assassination of President William McKinley on September 6, 1901, to the mass killing at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, the 20th century saw many murderous events that are difficult to contemplate but have become a part of the national history. This reference book is divided into three parts. Part One, arranged chronologically, details 53 of the most famous murder cases of the 20th century in the United States.

In Part Two, over 300 entries (alphabetically arranged by criminal) provide descriptions of crimes and are subdivided into male, female, and juvenile murderers; pair and group murderers; hate crime murderers; and school killings. Part Three features crime events related to over 40 selected victims. Cross references guide the reader to additional information. An index is included.

A Thorough History of Murders in America

Would you consider the audio edition of Murders In The United States to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the print version. Dave Wright gave a good voice performance with this book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Murders In The United States?

Gosh, so many memorable moments. People are killed for money, jealousy, anger, or people just being crazy. Makes you wonder who these people are and what are your chances of coming upon them.

What about Dave Wright’s performance did you like?

Dave's performance was steady, conversational, and level throughout.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I am shocked at the number of murders in the US in the past century, and the causes why.

Any additional comments?

Disclaimer, I was gifted a copy of this book for review. While I normally enjoy thrillers or dramas, the title “Murders in the United States” caught my eye. With the school killings in the past several years, along with racial based killings recently, as well terrorist killings, it makes you wonder if anything is fundamentally changed in US society. Which is why I asked the author R. Barri Flowers if what was occurring now was something new, or in line with historical killings. The book goes from murders from the decades of the 1900's, to black widow murderers, racial killings, school killings, killing victims, etc. To an extent, the information here is shocking. On the other hand, sometimes you need to get out of your comfort zone to really get a proper perspective of our culture and society. This is not a book you read to enjoy the story line. It is a hard dose of the reality of killings and murders in the US. It makes you think. Barri Flowers related that there has not been a corresponding increase of murders of the US, per se, in recent years, only that the availability of handguns has made it easier to commit a murder. This book is more along the lines of an academic work and will provide folks going into law enforcement a broader understanding of the realities of the types and causes of murders today. A good read, that makes you think. I give it five stars for being thoroughly researched and presented. It is fairly dry, but the sheer amount of information provided adds a tremendous amount of weight to the subject. For anyone looking into the subject of Murders in the US, this book will be a valuable resource in the years to come.

Fascinating subject matter. Uninspiring execution.

Book is presented in a litany of facts and brief synopses of murderers from the 20th century. Quite a few times names and crimes were repeated, making things redundant and making me wish more details of these crimes were presented instead. There is no narrative, lending an air of tediousness while listening.

Narrator has a nice voice, but his pronunciation of locales needs work.

A lot of info.

I did enjoy listening, but I found that it was a lot of stuff to process, and at a fast pace. It was not what I expected. On the bright side, I can listen to it again, because I know there were parts that I surely missed.

I do recommend this audiobook. A person just has to really be focused. The stories are very fast paced. Maybe less stories, and more details on those crimes would suit me better. We are all different, so maybe another listener will find it at his, or her pace.

Bravo Mr R.Barrie Flowers and Loraine Flowers. Good choice in the narrator. A lot of research done!

Keep up the good writing.

Not worth the money

What would have made Murders In The United States better?

If this book went into greater details it might have been a better book

What was most disappointing about R. Barri Flowers and H. Loraine Flowers ’s story?

Not only were the stories very short but many were repeated again during the book

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Very disappointed in the book overall and did not even finish listening to it. In all fairness this could have been written by an 8th or 9th grader. Very little time was spent researching each case.
