Enjoyable Listen

I have recently read several P&P variations and some of my comments I’m afraid are a reflection of them all. In this story it takes the first few chapters to get past the usual wearying misconceptions. Often, Elizabeth is not witty or enchanting, just rude and annoying. Mrs. Bennet is as desperately obnoxious as usual. Mr. Bennet is not funny or witty but an example of book smarts not equaling wisdom. He gets his jollies from making people uncomfortable with his inept witticisms. Hiding in the book room ensures he is never challenged to consider any other viewpoint. When someone does take him to task he simply stops listening and sends them away. Lizzy runs away when she is challenged beyond her understanding. She so often has no ability to move past her own opinion because often it’s not even her own. This is touched on in a thoughtful manner later in the book. The trouble with this era is no one ever speaks the truth and everyone is being manipulated by stifling manners, unrealistic expectations and striving to do the opposite of what is right. The morals of the “ton” are upside down and repressive.

Darcy’s identical twin is a mixture of Colonel Fitzwilliam and the overly charming Wickham (minus the evil). The brother’s story is heartbreaking. They are both attracted to Elizabeth but there is something up with that.

I really appreciated the trip to see the Elgin Marbles and the commentary about them. I enjoyed the story very much. An interesting concept to explore with our familiar characters in a new situation. It’s well written and the VV was not awful with two voices male and female.

In this book mr Darcy has found his twin a year earlier. He is a lieutenant. Charming and more open than Darcy. The both Darcys finds themselves drawn to Elizabeth. Great Jaff
