A genre-busting postapocalyptic first novel - a pause-resisting adventure channeling Animal Farm as imagined by Cormac McCarthy

The "war with no name" has begun; its goal, human extinction. The instigator of this war is the Colony, a race of intelligent ants who, for thousands of years, have been silently building an army that will forever eradicate the destructive, oppressive humans. Under the Colony's watchful eye, this utopia will be free of the humans' penchant for violence, exploitation, and religious superstition. The final step in the Colony's war effort is the transformation of surface animals into high-functioning two-legged beings who will rise up and kill their masters.

Former house cat turned war hero Mort(e) is famous for taking on the most dangerous missions and fighting the dreaded human bioweapon EMSAH. But the true motivation behind Mort(e)'s recklessness is his ongoing search for a pretransformation friend - a dog named Sheba. When he receives a mysterious message from the dwindling human resistance claiming Sheba is alive, he begins a journey that will take him from the remaining human strongholds to the heart of the Colony, where he will discover the source of EMSAH and learn the ultimate fate of all earth's creatures.

Reseñas editoriales

Editors Select, January 2015 - I now know without a doubt that my cat has it out for me – since I’ve caught her three times hanging out on my copy of Mort(e), as if surreptitiously taking notes. Robert Repino’s highly anticipated debut has shades of my favorite book from 2014, The Bees, but it’s much darker. A colony of super intelligent ants is planning the vengeful destruction of humanity, turning cats and dogs into soldiers, and at the center of our story is the great warrior Mort(e) (formerly a neutered, declawed housecat named Sebastian). Ok, so this might all sound ridiculous, but it’s actually blindingly smart and well-executed. Though less of a direct parable than Animal Farm, the big issues of mortality, love, honor, and loyalty are all at play here in a bleak, well-imagined apocalyptic world. Emily, Audible Editor

Overall, well done! Intriguing enough to keep me interested, lost me a bit about 7 hours in, but! Picked me right back up! Great examination of human culture :) if I say anymore I'll spoil it. A lot of story in a short amount of time. One I could recommend

Animal farm meets apocalypse

I liked the premise. I liked most of the story. it did get religous, especially toward the end. though it didn't take too much away from the book for me. the Morse code section got a little weird, I thought my phone had broken...

very religious

Any additional comments?

I just finished this book and I liked it. I noticed some reviewers like the first half and not the second. I did not find the second half disjointed or ambigious at all. I think its about how approaching the world with extreme logic or extreme religion are both insane. How the only true powers are love and friendship. And that you have to be true to yourself rather than believing what anyone else tells you.

Thought provoking

Definitely a weird tale. gets really negative and preach-y at times but as long as you don't listen for too long it's fine. ending was a bit too "neat" for my liking

weird story with bad narrator

I came for the apocalyptic ants and anthropomorphic animals, and I stayed for the philosophy of love.

Far better than I would have thought

What's seems like a gimmick unfold quite dramatically in unexpected ways! loved it! can't wait for the second

incredible read - from a SciFi burnout

Great story line. Great ideas to ponder. Ants have always fascinated me with their abilities and how they communicate. And I've ways wondered what would happen if our beloved pets became able to think like us.
I highly recommend this book. Weird ideas, but great fun !!!!!
I cant wait to hear the next ones in the series. Off to listen to D'arc now

Loved it!!

So this book might be the most fun to describe to someone else and I will spare any concerned reader of spoilers but this book is a real mind f*er. There is no way that you are prepared to listen to the words written in this book read and performed by Cousin Balki on Perfect Strangers but I assure you that whatever algorithm took you here has your best interest at heart!. Only negative note, listening to the sections where full genetic data and binary code are read is roughhhhhh. Listen / Read this book (am I the only one who feels like you didn't read the book if you listened to it... just me? okay.)!

Brain Exploded

Loved it. The alternative setting for the apocalypse gripped me all the way through. The development of consciousness in Mort(e) was intriguing.

Good stuff

loved it! it starts off rather intense and is full of complex emotional quandaries.. so if that doesn’t sound like your bag you may not be the optimal reader. also gonna throw a trigger warning for Mort(e) contain quite a bit of described animal harm.

gets the gears turning!
