Acerca de esta escucha

Bloomsbury presents Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa, read by Suzanne Toren.

A heart-wrenching, powerfully written novel: a Kite Runner for Palestine

‘One of the most thought-provoking books I've read ... written with passion and honesty, and poetry' Daily Mail

Mornings in Jenin is a devastating novel of love and loss, war and oppression, and heartbreak and hope, spanning five countries and four generations of one of the most intractable conflicts of our lifetime.

Palestine, 1948. Half a million Palestinians are forced from their homes. A mother clutches her six-month-old son as Israeli soldiers march through the village of Ein Hod. In a split second, her son is snatched from her arms and the fate of the Abulheja family is changed forever.

Forced into a refugee camp in Jenin and exiled from the ancient village that is their lifeblood, the family struggles to rebuild their world. Their stories unfold through the eyes of the youngest sibling, Amal, the daughter born in the camp who will eventually find herself alone in the United States; the eldest son who loses everything in the struggle for freedom; the stolen son who grows up as an Israeli, becoming an enemy soldier to his own brother.

‘The writer's pain – and the beauty of her prose – are very real' Telegraph

Lo que los oyentes dicen sobre Mornings in Jenin

Con calificación alta para:

The Book Is A Beautifully Written And Emotionally Captivating Story That Follows The Experiences Of A Palestinian Family Across Multiple Generations, Chronicling Their Struggles, Losses, Resilience, And Resistance In The Face Of The Israeli-palestinian Conflict. While Fictionalized, The Poetic Prose Vividly Captures The Generational Trauma, Displacement, And Oppression Endured By Palestinians. However, Some Reviewers Felt The Story Presented A One-sided Perspective, With Fictional Embellishments, And The Narration Lacked Authenticity In Portraying The Arabic Elements. Overall, It Is Praised As An Important And Heartbreaking Tale That Sheds Light On The Palestinian Experience And History.

A Must Read

This book is so raw and emotional that I checked many times to see if I was reading an autobiography.

As Eli Wiesel's "Night" was used to give a generation of Americans a portrait of Nazi oppression, so does this book belong in schools to give a generationof Americans a view of Zionist oppression.

If you want to know the truth about Palestine

An amazing story about the suffering of Palestinian people. Doesn’t do the suffering justice but gives you an idea to what it’s like being a Palestinian having you land stolen.

An incredibly important story

Should be required reading. Beautifully sheds light on a history little acknowledged in the US.

Incredible and important book

This is a must-read for these times. The story, while somewhat fictitious, highlights the grave injustices that the Palestinian people have faced for far too long, since the 1948 Nakba. It also highlights the beautiful love… of people, words, language, education, and life, and their incredible resilience that has led to them to carry on despite so many odds. Grateful for Susan’s words and bringing us into the world of Jenin and Palestine.

Heart rendering

This was a beautifully written, and exquisitely narrated novel that tells the story of the Palestinian experience through the experiences of four generations of one family. Their loves, immeasurable losses and perseverance in the face of bottomless grief. This novel broke my heart a thousand times over. Highly recommended.

Awesome storytelling that humanizes Palestinians

Loved all the different characters and the flair of a unique culture and society. It really brings it to life and makes the tragedies and injustices personal to the reader.

Necessary

I loved the story and the narration, despite the tragedy and suffering there was so much love in and between the lines. But it broke my heart thousand times.

The love of this beautiful family….❤️❤️

My heart is broken over this continuing war. Most people just want to love and protect their loved ones. I’ve learned that loss of a loved one can either lead to bitterness (and whatever results from that emotion—mostly horrible) or deep introspection of oneself and the realization that all humans want and deserve love, and the understanding that peace comes from fully loving all people even and especially those who have gone through hard things.

Beautiful prose and a story that must be heard

As the Palestinians are subject to a second Nakba, this story must be shared. A must-read. The prose is exquisitely beautiful and heartbreaking at times, and brought me to tears several times throughout the book.
