San Francisco's Laguna Honda Hospital is the last almshouse in the country, a descendant of the Hôtel-Dieu (God's hotel) that cared for the sick in the Middle Ages. Ballet dancers and rock musicians, professors and thieves - "anyone who had fallen, or, often, leapt, onto hard times" and needed extended medical care - ended up here. So did Victoria Sweet, who came for two months and stayed for 20 years. Outstanding story about a man’s struggles with life and medical school
Michael Meguid has written a fantastic companion to his first book, “roots and branches“. The second book addresses his struggles with identity while going through medical school in a culture foreign to his origin. The story is masterfully written and immediately relatable. David Sweeney-Bear’s narration is enjoyable to listen to. I highly recommend this to anyone in medicine or who has faced identity challenges.
