NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Metaxas is a scrupulous chronicler and has an eye for a good story. . . . full, instructive, and pacey.” —The Washington Post

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Eric Metaxas comes a brilliant and inspiring biography of the most influential man in modern history, Martin Luther, in time for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation

On All Hallow’s Eve in 1517, a young monk named Martin Luther posted a document he hoped would spark an academic debate, but that instead ignited a conflagration that would forever destroy the world he knew. Five hundred years after Luther’s now famous Ninety-five Theses appeared, Eric Metaxas, acclaimed biographer of the bestselling Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy and Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery, paints a startling portrait of the wild figure whose adamantine faith cracked the edifice of Western Christendom and dragged medieval Europe into the future. Written in riveting prose and impeccably researched, Martin Luther tells the searing tale of a humble man who, by bringing ugly truths to the highest seats of power, caused the explosion whose sound is still ringing in our ears. Luther’s monumental faith and courage gave birth to the ideals of liberty, equality, and individualism that today lie at the heart of all modern life.

Just in time for the 500th anniversary of Reformation Day, Eric Metaxas brings a engaging and thorough look at the man behind the legend of the 95 Theses. Like many of the heroes of the past, people tend to look over the real emotions and struggles they go through because if we see these people as more than human, it excuses us from doing great things. Metaxas brings the humanity back to Luther, a man with human struggles, doubt, fears, and passions, who trusted that what God said about himself in his word was as true in 1507 as it was in the time of the apostles. Throughout this book we see Luther finding himself in circumstances which require obedience and courage and the choices he makes that end up reforming Christianity and bringing it back to a Biblical model. Luther ends up being a great man because of his steadfast dependence on God and his humility in the face of an ever-growing throng of popularity.
I really enjoy Metaxas' own narration as he gives the inflections he intended in the writing, which livens up the writing and makes it seem like a conversation. Overall, this is a great book that I enjoyed immensely.

Eric Metaxas gives us a flesh and bone, brain and spirit, understanding of Martin Luther and the passions of his life. We clearly see the love Luther has for the Word of God. Metaxas clearly shows how Luther unshackled the Bible and made God's Word available to the world.

I got angry only once, but laughed many times. This is a highly quotable book, so much so, that I want a hard copy to mark up and share passages with others.

This is a beautiful book.

Eric metaxas does a splendid job of tracing out the story of Luther in history. His more powerful contribution however maybe in his application of Luther's way of thinking to our current culture. It is a masterful work to say the least.

Great application

In typical Metaxas fashion, the story of Martin Luther is both detailed and yet entertaining. His thorough research gives a confident representation of a complicated man. He also helps the reader understand not only the impact on an Era but on human history as well. Highly recommend!
