Children learn of how Gandhi became aware of racism's insidious effects as a young lawyer in South Africa, and accordingly developed his philosophy of passive resistance. Gandhi's contributions to Indian independence - among them the Salt March and 1940s hunger strikes against Hindu-Muslim violence - are discussed in detail, as is his philosophy, including the influence Russian author Leo Tolstoy and Gandhi's own doctrine of Satyagraha, which advocates mutual tolerance. Beaumont packs a lot of information into this brief survey, while nevertheless keeping the proceedings clear and well-paced.

What made this man’s death global news was the extraordinary life that had preceded it. The world gasped in shock that the man who had brought India her independence had been killed; that a man who had proven to be one of the most iconic figures of the twentieth century was dead. This man was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Born on 2 October 1869 in Porbunder, western India, he was married at the tender age of 13 to a girl named Kasturba. A Gentle and Influential Man
This introduction to the life of Mahatma Gandhi is very interesting and inciteful. One of the most interesting to me was his relationship with Leo Tolstoy, the Russian author, whom I greatly admire. The two corresponded and became friends even though Tolstoy was clearly a Christian and Gandhi was a Hindu. That says a lot about both men. Peaceful, nonviolent non-cooperation based on the belief that all are created equal was Gandhi's practice. His treatment when he traveled to Africa began a lifelong struggle against human bondage and mistreatment, and he eventually went to school in England to become a lawyer. He was instrumental in leading India to independence from England in 1947, but still fasted and prayed for peace, even while the separation from England was occurring. In 1948 he was shot at point blank range and died shortly afterward.
