we all want a Shangri-La

one of the best stories ever written.... simply an enjoyable read a return to a simpler time

Deep or shallow? You decide.

The idea had potential, but it seemed like the author got a little lost in his own philosophizing (like the “Jazz Odyssey” of literature). He seemed to be so impressed with his own idea that he was sure everyone else would be.
It feels like the story is leading up to more revelations than you actually get and, while the main character’s story is very well developed, other characters seem to be reduced to some shallow cultural generalizations or stereotypes.
I’m sure there are plenty of people who love this book so at least check out the sample to see if you’re interested.

Lost Horizon, a favorite book

I read Lost Horizon about 55 years ago. I enjoy listening to it. I came across the movie however I prefer the book overall.

Extrordinary, classic book.

Very good book and a wonderful reader. Story was not predictable, and yet thought provoking.

shangria, a real place?

A book that will allow you to think of shangrila as a real place. It gives a very real look into the hopes and fears of the men who see the buildup of conflict that will eventualy grow into WWII. the story was written and takes place in mid 1930s. and feels very real. There is allot of dialog and sometimes hard to keep the characters straight. but the pluky brit narrarator will help with a variety of, unconvincing but distinguishable, accents.

always a great classic read. Narrator sounded to me like Ronald Coleman was reading it.

Yes, Maybe with a different narrator. As stated above it is an intriguing story with some depth to both plot and characters.

What did you like best about this story?

The originality of the plot and the understanding of coming future events when written in early 1930's.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator's expression and tonality lacked empathy for the different traits of the characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The compelling human search by us all for our own personal lost utopia.

I loved the ending as it left the reader with the question of the reality of this search as it relates to the characters in the book and also within the readers own life.

I love this book!

60 years ago, when I was a young girl, I read this book and it made a profound impact on me. I still have the book but less time to read, so I was happy to see it as an Audible choice. I enjoyed it all over again. Love the old black and white movie as well. Thank you Audible!
