In the 20th century, the Roman Catholic Church rehabilitated him and the late Pope John Paul II spoke of his work with fondness. Erich Fromm, Eckhart Tolle, Richard Rohr, D. T. Suzuki, and Rudolf Steiner have all credited Eckhart as being an important influence on their thought.

Meister Eckhart (1260-1328) was a priest, a mystic, and nearly a heretic (he died before the Church court's verdict). In the 20th century, the Roman Catholic Church rehabilitated him and the late Pope John Paul II spoke of his work with fondness. However, what makes him of particular interest is the fact that he has influenced a wide range of spiritual teachers and mystics both inside and outside the Christian tradition. Erich Fromm, Eckhart Tolle, Richard Rohr, D. T. Suzuki, and Rudolf Steiner have all credited Eckhart as being an important influence on their thought.

Although he was an accomplished academic theologian, Eckhart's best-remembered works are his highly unusual sermons in the vernacular. Eckhart as a preaching friar attempted to guide his flock, as well as monks and nuns under his jurisdiction, with practical sermons on spiritual/psychological transformation and New Testament metaphorical content related to the creative power inherent in disinterest (dispassion or detachment). The central theme of Eckhart's German sermons is the presence of God in the individual soul, and the dignity of the soul of the just man.

Had what I was searching for.
I look to understand Meister Eckhart and of course His lecturers would need to be insightful about the remarkable subject he was insightful about.
These were successful lectures that provide insight into the setting as well as to the revelations that informed Eckardt’s ministry.

The author stays out of the way.
A no nonsense book on Meister Eckhart. Not a lot of medieval backstory, yay! A little about Eckhart himself, and a lot about his writings. Excellent. Exactly what I was looking for.

Surprisingly good
I found this to be an expectantly fine introduction to the rich and complex thought of Meister Eckhart. The author managers in the course of nine short lectures to give an overview of the wealth and depth of this great thinker. The narration does not have the polish of a professional reader, but that is easy to overlook. For anyone interested in the subject, this is a great place to begin.

This is a very complex subject and is presented in a confusing manner.
I personally found this book very difficult to follow and the performance very much lacking. While the subject matter is quite difficult to comprehend to begin with the flow of this book makes it even more so.
