When a traveling stranger appears one day, his unsettling presence sets off a chain reaction that will change the fates of everyone he encounters. It begins with the patriarch, John Walker, as he succumbs to a heart attack. His devastated son, Gordon, is forced to choose between leaving for college with his girlfriend, Leigh, and staying with his family to look after their floundering welding shop and, it is believed, to continue carrying out a mysterious task bequeathed to all Walker men. While Leigh is desperate to make a better life in the world beyond the desolation of Lions, Gordon is strangely hesitant to leave it behind. As more families abandon the town, he is faced with what seems to be a reasonable choice and the burden of betraying his own heart.

A story of awakening, Lions is an exquisite novel that explores ambition and an American obsession with self-improvement, the responsibilities we have to ourselves and each other, and the everyday illusions that pass for a life worth living.

The Power of Place

This novel has beautiful language, rich texture, and feels like a time many decades ago. But it is contemporary.

Lions is really the main character and at the conclusion, I thought, hmm...that's a bit like Cormack McCarthy--and I like it that a woman writes so against the grain of the romantic expectations in our culture.

I will probably listen to this again because although it seems like not much happens--it is slow--there are certain details that I didn't keep track of that were important. That's my fault for listening at bedtime!

It can also be seen as an interesting study of family, small town vs. city, history vs. mythology, living vs grieving, poverty and pride, old and young, and other major themes present in this one place on the high desert plains of eastern Colorado.

Dead Town

What a sad, depressing book about a factitious small town in Colorado. The town is dying, people are leaving, but a few want to hang on until the bitter end. The lives of two young people are explored as the town slowly expires.
