Dan Jones does it again!

I pre ordered this novel the moment it became available. I'll admit, after reading the summary before diving in I felt a little let down. It almost looked like it was going to be a boring novel about the everyday lives the remaining dogs returned to. Boy was I wrong. Even the parts that were like that left me gripped and unable to stop listening. Their was also some brilliant and happy surprises but also some bittersweet ones. Once again the narration was the best I've seen in anything like this. He truly makes each character sound as if another person is playing them. I can't give a higher recommendation for a book, but if you're new to the series you'll want to start at the beginning. I was also excited that Dan appears to leave the door open to return to these characters. Whether it's a fourth book in the series or a spin off I'll be waiting eagerly and will absolutely pre order it.

Great book and absolutely incredible reader

For fans of history, fiction, or historical fiction, don’t miss this series. Immaculately researched and presented with nuance, it is a standout of the genre.

Incredible finale

I’m so sad that this is the last installment of the Essex Dogs, I’ve absolutely loved the trilogy and the narration is perhaps the best of any audiobook I’ve listen to (and these been hundreds). Hope to hear more historical fiction from Dan soon!!

Really great. Felt like I waited forever for this one to come out, but it was worth the wait. The interview at the end was a nice surprise too.

I love these books. This one is a perfect delivery. The Essex Dogs have still got it, and then some.

Excellent end to the trilogy

I'm a big fan of Dan Jones's nonfiction work, and was surprised by how good his Essex Dogs books have been (since the 2 genres are so different in terms of writing, I've been told). The first 2 books were thoroughly enjoyable, both as works of fiction and as works of history, and Lion Hearts is no different. What really takes them to another level, though, is the absolutely stellar narration. Ben Miles does SUCH an amazing job in all 3 books. His takes on Scotsman and the Earl of North Hampton, in particular, would make the whole listen worth it, even if he didn't do such an excellent job voicing the other characters (which, thankfully, he also does).
