New York Times Best Seller
“As inviting, wide-ranging, and philosophical as an all-night conversation with a best friend, and as revealing and thought-provoking as the diary of a curious adventurer.” (Sasha Sagan, author of For Small Creatures Such as We)
You can travel the world looking for yourself, but if you don't know what you're looking for, how can you find it? Like Streams to the Ocean is about examining the things that make us who we are and getting to know ourselves, our stories, and the decisions that shape our one and only life.
Writing with the passion and clarity that made his debut, To Shake the Sleeping Self, a national best seller, Jedidiah Jenkins brings together new and old writings to explore the eight subjects that give life meaning: ego, family, home, friendship, love, work, death, the soul.
Who am I? What am I made of? How much of how I act boils down to avoiding the things that make me feel small? As he examines the experiences that shape our conscious and subconscious answers to these questions, Jenkins leads listeners in a wide-ranging conversation about finding fulfillment in the people and places around us and discovering the courage to show our deepest selves to the world.

When his mother, Barbara, turns seventy, Jedidiah Jenkins is reminded of a sobering truth: Our parents won’t live forever. For years, he and Barbara have talked about taking a trip together, just the two of them. They disagree about politics, about God, about the project of society—disagreements that hurt. But they love thrift stores, they love eating at diners, they love true crime, and they love each other. Jedidiah wants to step into Barbara’s world and get to know her in a way that occasional visits haven’t allowed.

At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch - first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her 23rd birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival.

Just a few years later, newly married and living in Nashville, Ruthie begins to experience debilitating pain. Her case confounds doctors and after numerous rounds of testing, imaging, and treatment, they prescribe narcotic painkillers - lots of them.

He had just graduated from Middlebury College and was ready to begin his adult life, but he didn't know how. So he decided to take a cross-country quest for guidance, one where everyone he met would be his guide. In the year that followed, he faced an Appalachian winter and a Mojave summer. He met beasts inside: fear, loneliness, doubt.

Brown Enough, Christopher Rivas's first book, is a literary memoir about what it truly means to be Brown in America. Holding the weight of being a Latino man, Christopher wonders where he falls on the color line, widened through his experience as an ethnically ambiguous actor of color in Hollywood and the many dangers and pitfalls that come from owning one's Brownness. Told through the lens of his personal stories and in a unique and literal voice, Christopher examines the deep history of his Dominican and Colombian heritage.

When Conor Knighton set off to explore America's "best idea", he worried the whole thing could end up being his worst idea. A broken engagement and a broken heart had left him longing for a change of scenery, but the plan he'd cooked up in response had gone a bit overboard in that department: Over the course of a single year, Knighton would visit every national park in the country, from Acadia to Zion.

At the beginning of his memoir Life Lived Wild: Adventures at the Edge of the Map, Rick Ridgeway tells us that if you add up all his many expeditions, he’s spent over five years of his life sleeping in tents: “And most of that in small tents pitched in the world’s most remote regions.” It’s not a boast so much as an explanation. Whether at elevation or raising a family back at sea level, those years taught him, he writes, “to distinguish matters of consequence from matters of inconsequence.” He leaves it to his listeners to do the final sort of which is which.

Reseñas de la Crítica
“Jedidiah Jenkins is a beautiful, attentively humane writer whose vivid prose comes suffused with the noble belief that words really do matter, and that through them we can know and be known. There is wisdom in this book, as well as something rarer still: the genuine and infectious faith that the good life - what the philosophers call flourishing - is attainable, and that one really can improve. I couldn’t put these essays down.” (Thomas Chatterton Williams, author of Self-Portrait in Black and White)
“Like Streams to the Ocean is as inviting, wide-ranging, and philosophical as an all-night conversation with a best friend, and as revealing and thought-provoking as the diary of a curious adventurer.” (Sasha Sagan, author of For Small Creatures Such as We)
“It’s rare to find the level of honesty and authenticity that Jenkins brings to his audience. In a world of constant noise, his storytelling is piercing in an almost familiar way. He’s managed to home in on that single idea that we all relate to and truly make you feel a part of the experience. This is the type of storytelling the world needs more of.” (Chris Burkard, award-winning photographer, author of At Glacier’s End)

Historia
As a child growing up in the wild beauty of the Ozarks, Barbara often spent her days exploring outside and daydreaming of faraway places in order to escape a life of poverty. She longed to trade her homemade clothes and outdoor toilet for spectacular adventures around the world. That chance came in the form of a wild-eyed, long-haired Viking-like young man named Peter. After an exciting courtship and a wedding on a dime, the young couple departed on foot from New Orleans on July 5, 1976, heading toward the Pacific Coast.

Love
My favorite of your books so far (and I’ve enjoyed them all). I enjoy the art of your writing and story immensely, but I also feel like a better person (and inspired to be a better person) when I read your books, and I love that.

Masterpiece.
I can't think of anyone I wouldn't recommend this book to. Brilliant, poignant, heartfelt, well presented, what else can be said. I have read or listened to thousands of books in my lifetime and I think this is quite possibly my all time favorite. Jedediah Jenkins, you have created a masterpiece.

An absolute delight
I love this book, so much so that I’m now going to purchase a physical copy so I can highlight all my favorite parts to read again and again. It’s funny, real, heartbreaking, and honestly human. My only disappointment is that it eventually came to an end..

Such a fun ride
I really enjoyed this book and Jedidiah's reading of it was so authentic, I felt like he was speaking directly to me. His interpretation of being a kid, a teenager, a young person, a confused adult, was so spot on in alignment with my own experience. Thanks Jed for putting words to something that until now was indescribable for me. And the quotables!! I'm going to listen again so I can capture my favorites. Wonderful book, I highly recommend.

Unlike Anything Else I’ve Ever Read
Jedidiah Jenkins speaks of his one life, but how could such wisdom be crammed into one so young. Surely, he is what’s referred to as an “old soul”.
At 78, I am astounded by his insights, self-awareness, courageous disclosures, and depth. I want him to be my next door neighbor, my lunch-mate, my party guest, my friend, and a part of my family. I want to have intense late-nite conversations with him over wine and cheese and berries. I want him to
Know how clearly I see him and how profoundly he affects me.
When I was a relatively young woman, my mom lovingly exclaimed, “Trish, other people just don’t think about the the things you think about!” She was wrong. Jedidiah does.
Thank you, Jed, for sharing your truth with me.
