An emotive journey in the life of a cancer patient

Lifebowl 2017 was an honest day-to-day accounting of what it is like to receive a cancer diagnosis, struggle through chemotherapy, and eventually come through it all. It showed me how gloriously warm and hospitable individuals who work in the health care industry are, and how challenging it can be to navigate red tape and hurdles of health insurance. It helped me to understand how difficult chemotherapy is – and what heros cancer patients all are. Tom Jordan did a wonderful job making you feel every emotion as you progress through the narrative. I thoroughly recommend this audiobook.

A Frightening Journey

I thought Lifebowl 2017 was a bittersweet listen. The author Douglas N. Schilling's battle with cancer AND the insurance company was heartwrenching. I don't know how it makes sense that an insurance company would prefer to pay for a procedure rather than medication. It's sad.

Douglas was strong to go through this but thankfully he had someone to help him and the fact that he kept a diary or journal was great. I've actually done that and recommend it. I hope he is doing well now.

Tom Jordan's narration was very well done. He portayed the situation perfectly and his tone reflected that of the feelings.

Cancer is awful.

SO, after downloading this book, it kind of sat in my que for a few days. Even though I really wanted to hear it, having very recently losing a family member to cancer, and thing her battle for over a year and a half, I wasn't sure I was ready. ( she was only 11 when she passed)

I am glad I did. I needed a happy ending with this awful killer. It was weird listening to his ordeal. I could completely understand everything he had to ordeal.
He is a hero in my mind. and I wish him good health always


The narrator did a fine job reading this.

LifeBoat 2017: Doug and the Hawkeyes vs. Cancer by Douglas N. Schilling was a good quick read. This was written during radiation and chemotherapy treatments. This was a good inside view of what goes on with someone during chemotherapy and radiation.

The reality of cancer treatment.

A very realistic look at an ugly subject.
I requested this book in exchange for my honest review because my family is experiencing a similar situation.
My brother had a port put in but unfortunately it didn't shrink as much as expected so the colostomy surgery is next.
It's hard to watch someone you love be in such incredible pain they don't have any fight left in them.
I'm recommending this book to everyone out there experiencing this hell.
I think listening to this very personal raw account will inspire others like my brother to keep going even when it feels impossible.
This book is one man's heartbreaking journey through the emotional process of fighting cancer and the side effects of treatment.
The narrators performance was poignant in conveying the authors trials and tribulations.
From the compassionate and caring professionals he encounters throughout his treatment to the unsympathetic battles with the health insurance system.
Surviving cancer should not depend on how much money 💰 you have in the bank.
Unfortunately for so many it does.
I wish this author a very successful recovery.
I think documenting and sharing his journey is courageous and inspirational.

An insight into a cancer diagnosis

If you are looking for a tale with a moral story this is not the book for you.

If you are looking for a real life account of what treatment and a cancer diagnosis is like this is the book for you. The author shares with us his journal detailing his fears not only of what is to come but of being seen as too needy. Baring all of his insecurities and letting the reader see into his experience in an unadulterated manner. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

This candid journal of a man's fight with cancer was illuminating. He shares intimate details with shocking vulnerability. There were several aspects which caught me off guard:

1. Possibly more than the cancer itself, the villain is the American healthcare system.

2. Each and every health care worker was a wonderful caring human being. Their empathy was evident at all moments.

3. The author's thankfulness would come up at times when I don't think I could have felt appreciative of anything.

4. The huge story arc of his cancer occurred in a frighteningly small amount of time.

The narrator's performance gave this book exactly the weight it needed. Every moment was treated with dignity. I'm glad I listened to this deeply personal story.

Take a trip through a cancer survivor's hell

Not the kind of work for a sunny afternoon. More for a dreary day when you're in a contemplative mood anyway. I played this while driving around for work and wound up on another man's journey through cancer. The narrative, about an hour in duration, comes from the journal of a suffering patient who not only has the disease to deal with, but the system. Raw emotion sears through, and you find yourself engulfed in his story.

Fortunately for all of us, there are caring people, good places to get care, and stamina on the part of the patient. More than once there was inclination to resign, but determination won the day.

Sad to think that there are millions of people around the world suffering in their own similar ways all the time. Like I said, not for the faint of heart or those who like a cherry on top.
