This book is not about life and death struggles. This book is the polar opposite. It is about the absolute, over-the-top insanity that I have witnessed during my time in the ER. This book is the untold, unseen, and unshared rants and raves of an ER nurse who has been slowly driven mad by his patients. I want you, the listener to step into my scrubs, see this bizarre world through my eyes, and understand that once you stop laughing in the ER, it's time to quit.

This book is the stupid stories that I still don't believe. It's the codes gone crazy. It's the "I can't believe you said that." It's a testament to everything an ER nurse puts up with on a day in and day out basis that most people don't know exists. It makes Scrubs, E.R., House, and all the other medical shows look like fairy tales.

As an ER nurse, I want to let the world know that when we pull that curtain and leave the room, we are laughing because let's face it, it's funny. Please don't listen to this book if you think you are going to hear about nursing at its finest. This is not Florence Nightingale's kind of nursing; this is the grit, spit, vomit and s#!t that comes with the job I love and hate so much.

Funny, funny, and true

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

As a nurse I found the stories and situations both hysterical and true! I laughed a lot which got a lot of stares on a quiet subway train when I was listening.

What did you like best about this story?

It gives an insiders look at what an ER is like and how people really act which is both ridiculous and stunning.

Have you listened to any of Cody J. Johnson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first listen to this reader. Did a great job bringing out the humor and emotions or the stories.

interesting, but.....

Not as enchantingring as I thought. stories seemed rushed.. This is a nurse with an attitude.

So real!

I've worked in an ER for several years and I could so relate to you all the things this nurse had to say. I laughed, I shook my head yes, shook my head no as I thought about all those crazy things that happen daily in every ER across the country.

Nurses life

Played this on a road trip with my family and everyone loved it. This isn't just about ER RN's. I don't care if you work on the floor or in the unit you have to put up with this stuff. Dani did what we all think of doing when you leave the patient room, go to the nurses station, look at your coworkers and say, "We've got to start writing this S@!/ down, no one would believe it". Found myself laughing and nodding along with the book.

The comedic quips

The major complaining. Needs more positiveness to offset it. I see a verry unsatisfied nurse that should have left the field way before this was written.

This book was hilarious, working in ER for over 15 years makes it very relatable.

very awkward chapter transitions. emotions hard to detect in performers voice. topic and story entertaining

Makes fun of patients

Horrible. I tried to listen but couldn't get past half of chapter 3. He's not funny to make fun of patient care. He's sarcastic and cruel - He shouldn't be in nursing. This makes me feel judged and no more than unacceptable gossip fodder between nurses, while I writhe in bed, sick and really needing help.

Also, the cover is terrible: a nurse with a beer, then a nurse/doctor pulling his hair with frustration. Finally, the big-eyed fish/girl in the front w with her mask on her neck needs to shave her mustache.

Get Adam Kay's "This is Going to Hurt"!!!! THEEEE funniest and true story of a young man describing his beginner Intern years through becoming the highest level of doctor, who not only cares immensely about his patients, never makes fun of them, and he tells HILARIOUS stories about his experiences - you won't be able to stop laughing. PERFECT if you want to laugh hard enough to get a belly ache. I've listened to it 4 times and it gets funnier every time. All very short experiences that easily paints a picture in your mind, definitely doesn't drag on like this cruel "Rants..." book, which makes me never want to be a patient, lest I be judged by those in charge of my care.... and it's all true.

I'm American, so usually British books turn me off, but Kay's book is super easy to understand, and again, SUPREMELY THE funniest book - on becoming an "Obs and Gynie" (obstetrics/gynecology) doctor, where he loves that he's in a department where one person comes in and goes out as two - "I'm looking at you, Geriatrics!").

Simply the BEST book I've heard in months if not years. One thing I wasn't expecting but really loved is his comparison between UK's Universal Healthcare (and private healthcare, also available in the UK), vs. our American private insurance care. It's a brief introspection of universal healthcare with valuable info. GET THAT BOOK INSTEAD, AND IT'LL TURN A BAD DAY INTO A GREAT ONE, and a good day into an unbelievably better one.

I ended up immediately buying his other 2 books which is simply just a hysterical conversation with a friend (and educational too - like the name of the doctor who discovered hand-washing, and why, and what each organ does: for instance, did you know your red veins are oxygenated and move away from the heart, and your blue veins return to the heart to retrieve more oxygen?)

I love the little quizzies at the end of each chapter which is totally chock full of fun facts and trivia.

* The book of Kay discussing human body organs with his funny friend (Mark Watson, I think?) is jam-packed with truisms similar to the following:

Smallpox is deadly to your system. However, if you've been exposed to Cowpox (a much milder illness than Smallpox) your system has already built the same antibodies; Cowpox essentially "tricks" your system into preventing Smallpox, as you already possess the antibodies - your body has become immune to Smallpox - thanks to having received Cowpox as a vaccine.

[ A neat fact (this is not mentioned in the book); here's a tidbit of the kind of unique info that you'll learn from the book featuring Adam Kay and his friend Mark Watson(?): the word "vaccination" was created because Vaca means "cow" in Spanish. ]

I also bought his most recent book featuring a plethora of famous people and is dedicated to the NHS,(there's a third book that's available in the US, and that totally bums me out).

DON'T WASTE A CREDIT ON THIS RN/RANTS... BOOK!

Seriously get Kay's "This is Going to Hurt," and/or his book with the dialogue between him and Watson. Both of those are worth, like 10 stars for each!!!
