Resumen del Editor

Her home. Her parents. Her freedom. Gone.

His dreams. His sister. Himself. Lost.

Two people.

One future.

The economy crashed, the country is floundering, and Carrie Ashworth struggles to keep her siblings alive. She has two jobs in her newly-formed, newly-outlawed clan: grow crops to feed 36 people, and maintain contact with Oliver Simmons, their local patrolman. Carrie's life is almost perfect when Greg Pierce shows up. He's a man with the ambition to help them survive - a man determined to hate her.

Greg sets to work devising systems to protect the clan from the new regime, but it doesn't take long to realize the true reason behind their safety. Patrolman Simmons has fallen for Carrie. When a government raid nearly wipes out their clan, Greg takes it upon himself to give the socially-awkward patrolman what he wants. But Carrie doesn't like Greg throwing her in Simmons' path, especially when Greg's brusque exterior melts, and she catches a glimpse of the real man underneath. Carrie is forced to choose: follow her heart or save her clan.

Life won't let her choose both.

Insipid

This started off badly. The audio narrator with a perfectly nice voice, gives the then 17-yr-old Carrie the voice of a 5-yr-old. Flash forward 5 years. Carrie sounds a little older now, but it doesn’t matter because she’s basically portrayed as a simpleton—super-duper naïve (the world is collapsing and she’s been living through it; even a kid would be less naïve.), totally idealistic, can’t say much of anything intelligent, passive, yet manages to take care of her younger brother and sister. She also blinks a lot.

Enter Greg, who inexplicable hates her on sight and is horrid to her. Absolutely awful, even though his grandmother and everyone in the community loves her. (I don’t know why except she’s a work horse.)

There’s also Carrie’s sister, who acts like everything is fine and dandy, shirks the chores necessary to survive, and almost gets everyone killed.

And that’s when I gave up—somewhere around hour 4.

I am more likely to believe in a zombie apocalypse than in who these characters are or even the set up of how they manage to survive their own stupidity.
