Master of Thin Air opens with a fall that the author very nearly could not stop down an almost vertical rock ramp leading to a 3,000-foot drop. The qualities that saved him then on K2 - in addition to his mountaineering know-how and sheer good luck - drove his 16-year journey to summit all of the world's 8,000ers, the 14 peaks that exceed 8,000 meters (26,000-plus feet) and take climbers into the death zone. Beautiful account of Everest!
I started the book to listen to while I was doing a simple task, but the narrator was so engaging and the words so beautiful, I ended up stopping what I was doing and listened all the way through in one sitting! The author describes each location beautifully and the narrator Dan Stevens makes the audiobook very vivid. This is a beautiful first hand account of the Everest ascent in 1953. I was completely enthralled. I highly recommend. This book is hard to find in print, so I definitely recommend the masterful audiobook!

Dan Stevens, though...
I bought this book to preoccupy me with an adventure on a long flight to Chicago, but that's not how Dan Stevens' voice works. Instead, Dan Stevens in his pajamas lays next to you in bed, you cradled in the nook of his arm, while he pours through the brittled pages of George Lowe's expedition. He takes a sip of tea with most every pause, on others he gently kisses you on the forehead as you nod off.
I forgot what this book was about. Something about a mountain, I think.
