Robert E. Lee, one of the most famous figures in American history, vanished after his dramatic surrender at Appomattox. In fact, he lived only another five years, during which time he did more than any other American to heal the wounds between North and South during the tempestuous postwar period.

This is a moving and intimate account of those years filled with the warmth of family ties and enduring friendships set against the harsh realities of Reconstruction. Though Lee is best remembered for his military campaigns, this was his finest hour, the great forgotten chapter of an extraordinary life.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"The narrator reads this gentle and poignant biography with an appropriately soft voice, sometimes slipping in a hint of a Southern accent which adds authenticity to the dialogue." (AudioFile)

Yes loved it!
I learned some new things about our General Lee One fine Gentleman.

Great book!!

The book itself is very interesting, but I was very distracted by the noises in the background. They are very faint, but they sound distinctly like other people talking.

Interesting history

A good story of General Lee's life after the destruction of the Army of Northern Virginia. In a few places the audio in the background appeared to me to have some minor distortion. I recommend this book for those interested in the Civil War and Reconstruction. Lee's life as a college president was very interesting to me.

Lee after the Civil War

Needed a post script! Geesh. No way to end an engaging narrative. Add a historical note.

Great Perspective

The first hour or two was a more general history leading to the end of the Civil War. It was not especially engaging, but once the war ended, the book became a more person story of Robert E. Lee the man, and that's when the book became interesting to me. This book captured the man and the times, and I really enjoyed it. I had not realized that Lee went on to become a college president! I learned a lot about the post Civil War period in the south, Lee's personal story made this especially engaging. The recording, though, was annoying. There is a very quiet echo-talk that I heard through the book. I even tried re-downloading it, but I still heard it. I eventually ignored it, and then the reader was okay. It was almost like someone was recording another book in a nearby room, and it was barely audible. I still liked this book in spite of that.

Interesting history; bad recording

Would you listen to Lee again? Why?

First book I've "read" that focuses on Lee's after War years. Highlights why he is such a beloved figure despite having fought against the country he swore to defend.
He's truly a mythical figure.

Fantastic!

The entire book had an echo of other words in the background. This recording belongs in the trash.

Horrible Production

There is a low echo in the audio. it was easy to overlook. The book is well read and the content flows nicely.
