Although the 21 books of Caxton's edition have been simplified to five, the actual text is Malory's. His famous work - like all great epics - dramatizes the dignity of noble men and women in the face of impending doom. Happily, in this case, the lofty message is accompanied by high adventure and romance, and Philip Madoc plays up both in his exciting narration. Revealing his Shakespearean training, his commanding performance is even more effective with the addition of Gregorian chants and medieval carols at the most dramatic moments. The sound quality is outstanding throughout.

This is the first of Tennyson's poems to be based on Sir Thomas Malory's Morte d'Arthur. The first draft was composed in 1834, and the finished work was published in Poems (1842). Later Tennyson incorporated the poem into the Idylls of the King (1870) under the title of "The Passing of Arthur". The narrative of this poem was drawn from the third, fourth, and fifth chapters of the 21st book of Thomas Malory's romance.

Chrétien de Troyes' Perceval is the single most important Arthurian romance. It contains the very first mention of the mysterious grail, later to become the Holy Grail and the focal point of the spiritual quest of the knights of Arthur's court. Chrétien left the poem unfinished, but the extraordinary and intriguing theme of the Grail was too good to leave, and other poets continued and eventually completed it.
