Acerca de esta escucha

In 1851, private detective Laetitia Rodd is enjoying a well-earned holiday when she gets an urgent request for her services. Mrs. Rodd’s neighbor Jacob Welland is a reclusive rich gentleman dying of consumption, and he wants Mrs. Rodd to find his brother, who has been missing for 15 years.

Joshua Welland was a scholar at Oxford, brilliant, eccentric, and desperately poor when he disappeared from the university. Friends claim to have seen him since, in gypsy camps and wandering around the countryside. But the last sighting was 10 years before - when Joshua claimed to be learning great secrets from the gypsies that would one day astound the whole world.

Mrs. Rodd travels to Oxford and begins to search for the wandering scholar. But as she investigates, Mrs. Rodd discovers something dark - and extremely dangerous - lurking in the beautiful English countryside.

Multiple individual stories woven expertly into a single plot line in a way that draws you in without leaving you lost. Characters are not confused because you come to know each one. The narrator not only changes accents and volume, but cadence and emotion with enough consistency that names were not essential to knowing who was in the room. In two cases, the identity of an approaching character was correctly assumed because it would be just like them to show up right now. Add the fact that this story refers back and forth between the past and present, including in the provision of historical context and asides directly to the reader, and the resulting tapestry reflects the work of a master weaver.

I LOVE the Laetitia Rodd mysteries! I hope Kate Saunders continues this series with several more books. I will look forward to more of Laetitia Rodd's good sense and her wonderful relationships. I will also say that Anna Bentinck's narrations of these books is wonderful. Her voices of the characters, especially the men's voices, are amazing. I could listen to her all day.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book!

These are beautiful mystery novels (2nd in the series) set in 1850s England. Anna Bentinck avoids the almost inevitable trap of tediously trotting out historical research. The world feels real, brilliantly constructed (and truly historically accurate). The plots of both books gently flex and twist to truly surprise endings. Ms Bentinck - please keep writing! We’re grateful.

A second mystery that does not disappoint

Laetitia Rodd on the case! What a strange and unusual person she is asked to hunt down. Kate Saunders keeps us guessing and even when you think you've figured it out, it's fun to read it thru to its end.

Interesting twists and turns!

I love a book I get emotional over - laughing, gasping or crying. And I especially love when I can’t figure out “who done it ‘
Give this one a read.

Surprised

Very well written book. This is the second book in the series and it doesn’t disappoint. I look forward to the release of the next book in the series.
Well worth the credit!

Another great book in this new series

I have mostly enjoyed the Laetitia Rodd books. The storytelling is engaging and I like the characters. However, there are so many characters in her books, and so many intersecting storylines that it can be difficult to keep everything and everyone straight. By the end of the book, I’ve truly forgotten who some of the minor characters are, which is frustrating because they all play some part in the plot and the resolution of the crimes. Maybe it would be easier to keep track if I read instead of listened to the books. I’m not sure. Anna Bentinck’s narration is great.

Enjoyable, but…

Another enjoyable Laetitia Rodd mystery! Anna Bentinck’s performance is wonderful (I could listen to anything she narrates!), and the story is full of twists and turns.
I hope Ms. Saunders continues to write (beautifully) more books in this series!

It’s 1851 in London and widow, Laetitia Rodd is busy on a case, searching for the missing brother of reclusive, wealthy Jacob Welland, who badly wants to reconcile with Joshua, who has been missing some 15 years. The brilliant young Joshua, an Oxford scholar, went missing, and has roamed the forests for years, with only random sightings of a wild and frightful young man. With Jacob on his deathbed, he badly wants to talk to his brother and make amends for the past, hiring Mrs. Rodd to locate him. A seemingly impossible task, Mrs. Rodd accepts the case, searching among the gypsies and coal burners, for Joshua. But everyone is close mouthed. This is an interesting and atmospheric tale, which is most enjoyable, taking twists and turns when you least expect it! Excellent story and conclusion! I hope there are more in the series soon!
