Great, We’ll Researched Biography!

Although the first several years into Kubrick life are slow, this book, it picks up as it gets into his more popular movies and his eccentric behavior (he’s super cheap).

Great walk through the work of a great artist

I watched all of the feature films, mainly in chronological order, with this great audiobook as a companion. A real fine journey!

This is worth the long listen time -- a scintillating and engrossing journey into the mind of one of the greatest filmmakers.

Kubrick the genius

Here is Stanley Kubrick in all his insufferable glory: The insurance claim filing, Big Mac eating, eccentric, obsessive, warm-hearted, credit-grabbing, doting dad, penny pinching maestro who tortured writers, actors, film crews, and basically anyone who got between him and his vision who was just a Jewish kid from the Bronx who liked to take photos. This is a fantastic book. That said, if you were playing a drinking game and taking a shot every time the authors used the phrase “And so Kubrick returned to ‘Tromme Novella…’” you would need emergency medical attention.

Amazingly Detailed Account of a Directing Titan.

For someone as reclusive and private as Kubrick, this book is incredibly researched and gives one of the closest looks possible at his life and career. The author does a wonderful job of explaining everything you’d want to know and keeping it interesting throughout the hours of listening. A must read/listen for fans of Kubrick and film.

Just as is its subject, this lovely biography of the twentieth century’s greatest cinematic artist is engaging and enchanting from beginning to end, exceedingly well performed by its reader.

A stellar biography for Kubrick lovers

Despite the biography beginning a little dry and somewhat reading as an essay, this reading progresses into truly extraordinary and captivating. Any lover of Stanley Kubrick will be dazzled by this well-researched, thorough analysis of Kubrick’s life and career.

A monster to admire

In broad strokes, as well as precise details, Kubrick can be seen as a demon of obsession and a poet of imagination. It’s incredible that one person can embody the humanity of Paths of Glory and the depravity of Clockwork Orange. How can one man make both Lolita and Dr. Strangelove? How does the misanthrope dote on family and sprawling menagerie of pets? We all think we know the public figures we admire, and it’s reassuring to read a book that confirms most of what you know, even as it turns out, inevitably that you don’t know that much. Kubrick emerges from this treatment, even more of himself than I had ever imagined. There is no need to understand or explain the man’s obsessions, because they are common to any of us who try to create original works: it is only the insane who begin something too big to finish, and it is only the true passions that create themselves into something complete, like the Space Odyssey. What an amazing, flawed and brilliant man, Mr. Kubrick was. And what an incredible library of the self he has left us, and is still worth studying.

Well done glimpse into the elusive Kubrick

Very much worth the time to any Kubrick or Movie fan. Perhaps the silver lining to such a tragic loss of Stanley right after her eyes wide shut is the fact that he went to sleep that night with a smile on his face. God bless you, Stanley! Until we see you again. Cheers
