For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

I order another bourbon, neat. This is the drink that will flip the switch. I don’t even know how I got here, to this place, to this point. Something is happening to me lately. I’m drinking too much. My sheets are soaking wet when I wake up from nightmares of decaying corpses. I order another drink and swig it, trying to forget about the latest case I can’t shake. Crime solving for me is more complex than the challenge of the hunt, or the process of piecing together a scientific puzzle. The thought of good people suffering drives me to the point of obsession.

For more than a century, some of the world’s most important thinkers and leaders—men like Arthur Conan Doyle and William Butler Yeats—gathered once a month and discussed the supernatural at The Ghost Club in London. In the early 1900s the club's chairman was Harry Price, the world’s most well-known ghost hunter. He and other members, like Harry Houdini, sought to debunk the charlatans who preyed on vulnerable people with fake seances, tarot readings, and spiritual encounters.

A riveting, cautionary tale rooted in history that continues to echo today, The Killer's Shadow is a terrifying and essential exploration of the criminal personality in the vile grip of extremism and what happens when rage-filled speech evolves into deadly action and hatred of the “other" is allowed full reign.

Resumen del Editor
Best-selling author, cohost of the hit podcast The Murder Squad, and true-crime investigative journalist Billy Jensen goes to Columbus, Ohio, where he examines the unsolved cases of 18 dead and missing women whom he suspects were the victims of serial killers on the loose and operating under cover of the opioid epidemic in America's heartland.
In Chase Darkness with Me, listeners learned Billy Jensen's journalist origin story, his struggles, his call to adventure, and his first successes in solving murders.
In Killers Amidst Killers, listeners will ride shotgun with Jensen as he takes on serial killers who are walking among us and planning their next moves in real time. The facts are not in old police reports and faded photos. They unfold before our ears.
Our story begins in 2017, when two young women, best friends Danielle and Lindsey, go missing within weeks of each other, and their bodies are found soon thereafter.
As Jensen investigates Danielle and Lindsey's cases, he comes across other missing and murdered women, and before long, he uncovers 18 of them. All unsolved. And no one was talking about it.
These are not women who were raised in the street. They got hooked on pills. The pills were taken away. They get hooked on heroin. And when the money was gone, they had to sell themselves. It all happens very quick.
Through his investigations and the help of experts, Jensen identifies serial killers in Cleveland and Columbus. Why there? Because it's easy. Sharks go where the swimmers are. Serial killers go where the easy prey are–ground zero of the opioid epidemic. The heart of America.
Jensen hunts these predators to bring peace to the victims' suffering families while putting a spotlight on a system that is leaving hundreds of thousands of bodies in its wake.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

In 1995, James W. Loewen penned the classic work of criticism Lies My Teacher Told Me, a left-leaning corrective that addressed much of what was sanitized and omitted from American history books. But in the decades that followed, false leftist narratives—as wrong as those they supplanted—have come to dominate American academia and education. Now, in the same spirit but updated for 2024, Wilfred Reilly demolishes the scholastic myths propagated by the left, uncovers fresh angles on “established” events, and turns what we think we know about history upside down.

Billy Jensen, at his best again
Billy Jensen always delivers powerful stories from a victims’ and survivors’ POV. He touches on so many issues revolving around the opioid epidemic, sex work, and of course, murder, and tells it in a way that makes you really want to get out there and change the world. Exactly how crime writing should be done. Phenomenal book.

In the Author’s Voice: A Review of ‘Killers Amidst Killers’ by Billy Jensen
So, have you heard about Billy Jensen’s latest dive into true crime, “Killers Amidst Killers”? It’s like he’s taken us right into the heart of Columbus, Ohio, to figure out what happened to Danielle and Lindsey, these two best friends who mysteriously disappeared. It’s wild how he connects their story to the opioid crisis and this pattern of women being targeted, you know?
The way Jensen tells the story, it’s super engaging. He’s not just reading the book; he’s sharing a story, and you can really feel his passion for the subject. It’s almost like sitting down with him and hearing about his investigation firsthand. He’s got this way of making you feel part of the journey, from the dark alleys to the courtrooms.
And the thing is, it’s not just another true crime story. Jensen digs deep into the whole opioid epidemic and how it’s affecting so many lives. It’s crazy to think about the number of women caught up in this, and Jensen doesn’t just tell their stories—he’s also calling out the bigger issues, like how society and the system are failing these people.
He’s spent like five years on this project, and you can tell. There’s so much detail and care put into understanding not just the what, but the why behind these crimes. It’s more than just trying to solve a mystery; it’s about bringing to light the struggles and injustices these women faced.
So, yeah, if you’re into true crime, or even just interested in the social issues around the opioid crisis, this audiobook is definitely worth your time. It’s one of those listens that sticks with you, you know? Plus, Jensen’s storytelling skills are top-notch. It’s like a deep, intense conversation with a friend who just happens to be an expert in true crime.

Hits close to home
I live in Ohio and knew there were women missing. I followed the Chillicothe story. But, I had no idea there were so many. The opioid crisis is evident here. Now, after listening to this book, I’m convinced there is a killing crisis as well.

A refreshing lens on true crime
I highly recommend this book as a different take on serial killers and the vulnerable people they prey on.

Chilling and challenging
Well written and captivating. This one is going to be hard to read and hard to put down at the same time. The author did an excellent job with the subject matter and I was reminded of so many women I met at the homeless shelter in my home town.
