Resumen del Editor

Learn about the Iron Curtain with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. The “iron curtain” is the term used to describe the strict division of Western and Eastern Europe between 1945 and 1991. The conflict was between Western Allies and the Soviet Union. Although they had been allies during World War Two, they soon became bitter rivals after it ended.

World War Two was waged from 1939 until 1945. From the early 1940s, three of the strongest Allied powers in the war were the US, Britain, and the Soviet Union. They worked together to defeat the Nazis. But their different ideologies and governments caused the alliance to dissipate after the war. Their different views sparked such a rivalry that a boundary was built by the Soviets to keep out the West. This boundary was known as the “iron curtain”. To understand why the “iron curtain” was erected, it is important to know the differences between the Soviet and US governments.

Good Short Overview of Iron Curtain

I found this eight minute audio on the Iron Curtain to be very good. Of course, an in depth account isn't possible in eight minutes, but the explanation of the Soviet Union versus the Allied countries' views and how the Iron Curtain came about was explained well, as was the changes which came about in the 1980s. The years of the Cold War had a devastating impact on Eastern Europe, and we happened to be stationed in West Germany with the US military when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. A drive into the former East Germany was an eye-opener for us, seeing dilapidated buildings, very poorly maintained roads and a completely different world than existed in West Germany.

Good overview with disputable content

Its a brief history, so its understandable it couldn't go into everything. I found it too forgiving of the Soviet's aggression, and at one point claimed that Gorbachev didn't want to dominate eastern Europe anymore. I find that interpretation to be a fatuous Western fantasy - Gorbachev was a Communist who wanted his bureaucracy to stop lying and coving up their problems, not that he wanted pro-liberty reform.
