Acerca de esta escucha
Now, three decades later, Julia Alvarez, also a daughter of the Dominican Republic and long haunted by these sisters, immerses us in a tangled and dangerous moment in Hispanic Caribbean history to tell their story in the only way it can truly be understood: through fiction. In this brilliantly characterized novel, the voices of all four sisters - Minerva, Patria, Maria Teresa, and Dede - speak across the decades, to tell their own stories, from hair ribbons to gunrunning to prison torture, and to describe the everyday horrors of life under Trujillo's rule.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

As Tony follows his own path toward adulthood, he relies on the wisdom of Ultima, a magical healer, to forge his unique identity. A modern classic in the African literary canon and voted in the Top Ten Africa’s 100 Best Books of the 20th Century, this novel brings to the politics of decolonization theory the energy of women’s rights. An extraordinarily well-crafted work, this book is a work of vision. Through its deft negotiation of race, class, gender, and cultural change, it dramatizes the "nervousness" of the "postcolonial" conditions that bedevil us still.

Frustrating Narration
The narrator of the youngest sister was infuriating. Even after the girl was no longer 10 years old and a grown woman in jail, the narrator still sounded like a little girl. I almost couldnt finish it.
Also the switches between sisters included different formats (two of the sisters were their narration in first person, while the youngest sister's story was told through journals), and I believe a forth sister's story (the main character) was told in third person in the past? It was a bit confusing and didnt really work in my opinion. More distracting than anything.

Beautiful story and narration
This is one of my favorite audio books in a long time. The narration (done by several different people) was fantastic, the story and writing drew me in the entire time. The prose is at the same time rich and beautiful, but also simple and easy to follow.

The truth is...
Would you listen to In the Time of the Butterflies again? Why?
I would to remember parts I might have missed.
What other book might you compare In the Time of the Butterflies to and why?
I can't think of any comparison.
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
Having several different narrators for each sister was confusing at times, but interesting too.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No.
Any additional comments?
A book that opens a dorr to a forgotten part of the past.

interesting
There was a lot going on in this book and I don't know a whole lot about the history, but it was refreshing to hear about these places and the Spanish woven throughout. Growing up visiting some of these places in the summer with my family, I could picture a lot of it in my mind. It was really interesting to learn about their personal lives and I could imagine my own aunts and grandmothers saying the same types of things.

Chapters incorrect
The reading an actual audio is good, however, the chapters don't match up with the actual chapters of the book. This was frustrating.

I LOVED this!!
I only write reviews when something is extraordinary. Everything about this is above and beyond. The narrators were EXCELLENT! The story was beautifully and vividly written by Julia Alvarez. Most of all, the true story of the Mirabal sisters has touched my heart so deeply. I'm afraid I can't do the story justice. I am grateful to Julia Alvarez for telling their story. This book AND audiobook would make a memorable and beautiful gift not only for all sisters and mothers - but for anyone who would be touched and moved by bravery and steadfastness in the face of tyranny and oppression. Just read it and even better, listen to it, and you will give *yourself* a gift. My heart is just overflowing. I feel that I'm a better person for having heard their story. I plan to give this audiobook to each of my sisters.

The fictional butterflies are not legends, they are real human being
I started reading this book because of a local show, the more I read it, the more attracted I am. The Mirabal sisters are real human being that have coverage to fight for what’s right in their hearts. They are not saints or legends, they are ordinary women that sticked to what they believe.
