Resumen del Editor

In a Mirror City is a chilling, dystopian sci-fi noir about a girl called Maja Larsen, who is trapped in a world that was broken long before she was born. Maja is caught up in this fast-paced conspiracy, aided and abetted by a ragged guard of criminals and thieves and hounded by authorities that seem to know more about Maja than she does herself.

Shades of Orwell's 1984 ...

Just finished Mirror City By Stevie O'Connor. It caught my attention from the first paragraph and with few acceptations riveted me to the very end. It is about a futuristic dystopian world that is shattered by conflict between the two dominant factions. The protagonist, initially presented as a defenseless cog ground down by the machine of state is revealed as the fulcrum on which the coming conflict will depend.
The material is presented flawlessly by Sara Morsey. While supremely talented narrators like George Guidall and Dick Hill have the ability to put the listener in a different time and place I found Sara's performance did just that.

Kickass Heroine

Wow, that's all I can say about this book, I love dystopian novels and this one is done well. Maja Larson is the kickass heroine in this well-written novel, she's a loner, aloof, and she has a serious mean streak when she gets angry, if Maja sees red it's best to stay out of her way!

In A Mirror City is dark, graphic and extremely violent and I loved it! The audiobook slides in at just under 7 hours and is narrated by Sara Morsey and she does an excellent job reading this book. Her narration style is well suited for this genre and she exudes just the right amount of emotion and when she reads the scenes where Maja is fighting, you feel like you’re right there along for the ride.

Stevie O'Connor is a new author to me and my fervent hope is more of her books make it to audio form, I for one will be anxiously waiting!

This audiobook was gifted to me exchange for an unbiased review!

This is a book I will recommend to everybody

This the story of Maja, a teenage girl, with a much older spirit than her real age, trapped inside the system of a decadent society. We are told about her childhood in the Cage, a kind of refuge camp where poor people and prisoners go, living in the worst possible conditions, surrounded by trash, radioactivity and death. We are also told about the short time she spent in the pleasure house and the time she had to fight in the pits, where men and women have to fight each other to death to the delight of rich spectators. Here is where she will meet Lundrun, her nemesis, and also other people who will be with her almost until the end, to complete a mission, about which she does not have all the details, but for which she is the key.

We are not given much information at the beginning, and some of the details are confusing, but I enjoyed discovering the information while I was listening to the story. I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. Maja is quite a character and one cannot help but admire her. She goes against everything, agains a sick society, against all the odds, but she never gives up. She finds some people along the way which she (and we) does not know if she can trust, because she has a mission, but she does not have all the information. It will be a long way, but only close to the end we will know her goal.

One of the scariest things about this book is that the society depicted on it could be ours in a not so distant future. Human rights being violated, the society collapsing, social classes growing even more apart and things that we deem impossible today becoming possible with the greed of a small group of privileged people. One cannot feel but despair reading about it, but this book also bring us light, and people fighting for a better world, even if that means sacrificing what little they have. I love dystopian stories, and I have read many, but this one has touched me in a special way, because as crazy as this scenario can be, I see the possibility of our world turning into something similar.

Sara Morsey did a beautiful narration and impersonation of Maja, along with the rest of characters. The only negative thing I can say is that the audio edits were a bit too evident, but that did not distract me from the powerful story that Stevie O'Connor has shaped for us.

This is a book I will recommend to everybody. Not only to those who enjoy dystopian stories, since I think we all should think about the direction this society is taking, and how some imaginary stories could become reality one day.

Interesting concepts and likable heroine

This book was pretty good. Its set in the future and a lot of the concepts seem realistic and totally plausable. The author did a good job describing the desacrated earth and I especially liked how he descibed the environmental impact of our current apathy and the unfornate and inevitable consequenses and how they impacted society. The techonology seemed very believable as well. The heroine seemed quite capable and I'd love to read a prequel describing her story and how she came to be. I could definitely see this as a series and maybe even as a movie. The narrator did a great job as well.

Futuristic turmoil and an exceptional heroine

I somewhat enjoyed this book. For the most part, it was pretty good. There were a few times though when it just lost my attention for one reason or another.

I found myself lost a few times and wondering how we got here. It seems like at some points in the book, time and events are completely skipped and I was left trying to figure out what just happened.

I did enjoy Maja. She was a very likable and resilient character. After the things she went through and endured, it's amazing that anyone would be able to, or want to live any longer. I thought the author did a great job of setting up the character and explaining past events in her life that helped her become who she was.

The narration was just okay. Neither bad, nor great in my opinion. She got the job done. Some of the voices were a little weird, but I guess one person doing many different voices lends itself to that.

Overall, I liked the book, but I think there are many ways it could have been better.
