How To Train Your Dog with Love + Science presents a modern and science-based approach to dog training, showing how behavior can be changed without coercion and force. Annie Grossman, a journalist-turned-dog trainer, breaks down what positive reinforcement actually is and makes the case that "good dog training" may even be a window into understanding ourselves.

Grossman offers building-block exercises and tips on how to train effectively using the reward-based methods she's honed over the last decade with clients at her Manhattan training center, School For The Dogs. Whether you've just brought a new dog into your home or you're wanting to teach an old one new tricks, How to Train Your Dog with Love + Science will help you consider what behaviors you want and help you to achieve your goals using techniques rooted in the science of behavior.

Woven into this how-to guide is the century-long history of positive reinforcement training, from Pavlov's dogs and Skinner's rats to today's apartment-dwelling dogs using Wifi-enabled devices.

By employing the easy-to-understand techniques in this book, you will be able to train your dog to live confidently, comfortably, and happily in your world.

So excited this book exists. It’s a wonderful look at how to think about training and how to communicate with your dog. As a pet professional I’m so happy to have this resource to refer my clients to. It will help shape the mindset as well as give practical application tips to get anyone started on the journey coexisting with their pet. 10/10

The book didn’t let me down at all. I was looking for a reading that would help me better understand my nervous, frightful pup, and be of better help in his discovery of our human world. Mostly because my own frustration sometimes does more harm than good.

I didn’t want a training manual or a recipe book, but a broader approach that would help me get a better picture of how a dog mind works and how to leverage our joint learning process. And that’s exactly what this one is, a first approach to how humans and dogs are different, in what we are similar, and how to foster trust, self confidence, and joy in learning. Yes, it includes some exercises, but mostly they illustrate the overall point of a chapter or section in a practical way.

I find it more useful to understand what is beneath a certain process of teaching because it allows easier extrapolation to one’s temperament, situation, and needs.

In the downside, this is a book I would have liked to underline, so having it in audio version was not the most clever choice. An easy fix, and a good pretext to revisit some passages.

I see the world through a dog's eyes for the first time after reading this simple approach to Dog Training in this new book "Train Your Dog with Love and Science" by Annie Grossman. I learned to understand a dog's reactions to day to day events in a new light - not by how the dogs behaviors were affecting the person and others but how the dog was being affected by what they were exposed to. In a clear, well organized way I learned that using positive reinforcement can help a dog better cope with what is happening and feel less unsafe in a people environment. This approach reinforces that dogs' behaviors need to be better understood in order to help them adapt to the world around them. Looking at how the dog experiences the world was freeing to me. Although I do not have a dog now, when I did, I never knew how to help him change behaviors that were difficult for me to cope with. I also found the book helped free me from thinking that my dog was doing things "to me" but rather reacting to situations because he was stressed.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and in my work I value constructive communication in relationships. I believe that being kind to each other is a central part of successful relationships.and this book helped me see that animals are no different. Kindness to animals is just as important.
I am grateful to Annie Grossman for taking the time to write this book and give me and the world a detailed plan on how to proceed in training a dog. Her ideas are backed by sharing useful information and research as well as her own personal experience as a dog owner and trainer. I highly recommend this book for people who want to learn a positive way to approach training their dog and for anyone who wants to contemplate in a new way the dogs they know or meet on their lifepath.
