Many of us dread having to convey our ideas to others, often feeling ill-equipped, anxious, and awkward. Public speaking experts help by focusing on planned communication experiences such as slide presentations, pitches, or formal talks. Yet, most of our professional and personal communication occurs in spontaneous situations that creep up on us and all too often leave us flustered and stumbling for words. Stanford lecturer, podcast host, and communication expert Matt Abrahams provides tangible, actionable skills to help even the most anxious of speakers succeed when speaking spontaneously.

Good conversations starts by understanding first.
I remember standing at a networking event, holding my drink like it was some kind of shield. Everyone around me seemed to be effortlessly chatting, laughing, making connections, while I stood there, running through a mental list of conversation starters, too nervous to actually say anything. When I finally did speak, it felt forced, and the small talk fizzled out fast.
Looking back, I wish I had known that good conversations aren’t about impressing people with the perfect words. This audiobook helps me realize that confidence comes from knowing how to listen, read the room, and make genuine connections without overthinking every sentence. It’s not about talking more but about knowing how to talk so it feels natural.

The Boost I Needed
I have been looking for resources on how to improve my speaking abilities, especially in work settings. I can talk and talk to friends, but when I'm at work, I shrivel up and am often lost for words. The steps outlined to help battle social anxiety are immensely helpful, but also the guidance on online communication, which I thought I had down -- but I clearly did not, which, as an adult professional, I feel a little ashamed of. This book has been a real help in boosting my confidence to go beyond the chit-chat and sustain engaging conversation. This was a great listen!

Always Looking for More Help
Communication skills are so important and I’m always looking to improve. Deborah Meyers presents great strategies to help overcome social anxiety, and build meaningful connections with confidence.
What makes this audiobook one of the best I’ve listened to is its emphasis on developing my own communication skills in a way that fits my personality. I have always struggled with networking, and dreaded any time I knew I was about to meet someone new. This audio provides much appreciated help to deal with my social anxiety in these areas.
Hope March’s narration is very clear, enhancing the book’s practical advice.
