Acerca de esta escucha

"You'll not only break the ice, you'll melt it away with your new skills." -Larry King

"The lost art of verbal communication may be revitalized by Leil Lowndes." -Harvey McKay, author of How to Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive

What is that magic quality that makes some people instantly loved and respected? Everyone wants to be their friend (or, if single, their lover). In business, they rise swiftly to the top of the corporate ladder. What is their “Midas touch?”

What it boils down to is a more skillful way of dealing with people.

The author has spent her career teaching people how to communicate for success. In her book How to Talk to Anyone, Lowndes offers 92 easy and effective sure-fire success techniques - she takes the listener from first meeting all the way up to sophisticated techniques used by the big winners in life. In this information-packed audiobook you’ll find:

  • 9 ways to make a dynamite first impression
  • 14 ways to master small talk, “big talk,” and body language
  • 14 ways to walk and talk like a VIP or celebrity
  • 6 ways to sound like an insider in any crowd
  • 7 ways to establish deep subliminal rapport with anyone
  • 9 ways to feed someone’s ego (and know when NOT to!)
  • 11 ways to make your phone a powerful communications tool
  • 15 ways to work a party like a politician works a room
  • 7 ways to talk with tigers and not get eaten alive

In her trademark entertaining and straight-shooting style, Leil gives the techniques catchy names so you’ll remember them when you really need them, including: “Rubberneck the Room,” “Be a Copyclass,” “Come Hither Hands,” “Bare Their Hot Button,” “The Great Scorecard in the Sky,” and “Play the Tombstone Game,” for big success in your social life, romance, and business.

How to Talk to Anyone, which is an update of her popular book, Talking the Winner's Way (see the 5-star reviews of the latter) is based on solid research about techniques that work!

By the way, don't confuse How to Talk to Anyone with one of Leil's previous books, How to Talk to Anybody About Anything. This one is completely different!

I'm so glad I didn't read this comment section before I bought this book, I had to buy the physical book after listening because there's so much good information in this book. This isn't a book you read front to back, this is a book you keep coming back to and referencing like a textbook on communication. I highly recommend this book because even if out of the 92 tips you only find 2 or 3 really useful to you, that 2 or 3 once implemented could make a huge difference in your life and relationships.

Such a great book I had to buy a hard copy

This was my second book on my list of conversational books. I'm still parsing exactly what I want from each of these books, but now with two entire books and notes under my belt I have a much better sense for what I want.

Content: 5/5
Jam packed with information and scope for each piece of advice.

This book was an absolute joy to go through from my perspective. The author may be a bit older, and there may be some silly dated words thrown in from time to time, but the content is timeless. Nearly every tip that is given is still applicable with a few exceptions. This is well within the bounds for a book published in 1999. The author makes it very clear that though all of these tips are powerful within their specified utilization, practice makes perfect. You need to take the advice given and actively practice. Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them with the guide stones you have been given.

The author makes every trick more memorable by giving it a fun name of some sort. I can imagine this can irritate people who take themselves very seriously or find little frivolous mnemonic devices useless. For me though, I find myself able to remember these tips as they are relevant thanks to the names. They stand out in my head very well once I put a bit of effort into memorization.

Each tip is also given context, which massively helps your understanding of proper utilization. Though most of the stories are thoroughly mundane, they are equally effective in teaching and making the concepts concrete. Along with this I personally find it fun getting a glimpse in to those smaller moments of someone's life. The moments the author gives very obviously made some sort of impact upon them which fosters some small form of connection while you are reading. Leil's life seems overall exciting, even if I'm reading about it from a book about how to get good at talking.

Like I tend to say, take the stories with a grain of salt since the author is our only source of information, but if you are willing to trust her or suspend your disbelief enough to trust the book is a fun and educational ride.

Presentation: 5/5
The author is a writer and speaker by trade. It is very clear in the clear and concise data passed on.

There is definitely effort applied to make the book appear conversational. The words used and the general perspective of the book gives a warm feeling of conversation somehow. You feel like you are almost reading a diary or someone's journal. Obviously the point of the book is still learning so it's segmented into separate steps, but to me it really just supports the overall tone of the book. You feel at least a little familiar with the author by the end. For me personally I felt close enough to be tempted to mention her by name through out this entire review.

Performance: 5/5
Excellent performance with a very similar voice to the author.

I'll say that this book would have been tolerable on 1x speed. The speaker, Joyce Bean, has a very good cadence. You can listen to her speak and just enjoy it. I still listened on 1.5x speed to save time, but I have to say that I do regret it a bit after re-listening to a chapter on 1x speed. I felt like I was being spoken to directly with the purpose of learning and it was very nice and refreshing.

At the end of the book I went back to listen to the introduction again just to compare the voice of the speaker and of the author and I'll say it was a good selection. I could very easily believe that was her voice as a younger person.

Overall: 5/5
This is a hard recommend from me. I love the book and I feel like it has a lot of potential to actually help people. I knew a good bit already myself but there was still a ton of tricks that made my eyes go wide for a few moments. An excellent book with a very fun set of stories for scope.

Excellent information told from a fun perspective!

There are a few useful tips and reminders for business professionals. I was disappointed with the writing and her pandering to male counterparts. As a Dad, not something I would recommend to my daughters as they enter their professional careers. I’ll just send them my notes.

A few good tidbits

Nothing extraordinary insights. Lots of stories and slow talk. Listened at 1.5 speed and skipped sections when it got too much.

If you are completely new to socializing it may be worth your time though.

If you are terrible with people, give it a go

Well anyone could benefit from this book, not everyone would want to. It's intended for people who want to learn etiquette in higher social and business class circles. Very good and practical.

I have done a lot right in the last 40 years of self employment. But now looking back after reading this book, I see room for much improvement. Reactions, responses, followups, and relationships that I could have saved along with some I should not have saved. Lots of great advice with situational examples.
I have the audio and am listening for a third time . I can pass much of it along to those I train who need to learn relationship building techniques. A much needed book for today’s young entrepreneur !
Our success is built on our character, and our character is built on how we relate to others and what is in it for them.
Whether you want to build your social relationships or your business relationships, you will benefit greatly with putting the advice in this book into every day practice.
