Acerca de esta escucha

Jeremy Steele knows what it means to suck as a Christian—because he's an expert. How to Not Suck as a Christian takes an unflinching look at the ways Christians often miss the mark, from misusing scripture and manipulating others to failing at basic empathy. With chapters like "Be Pro-Choice Because God Is" and "Stop the Homophobia", this book isn't afraid to tackle the controversial issues that make the more fundamentalist Christians squirm.

FAIR WARNING: This book is as likely to provoke laughter as it is discomfort. But don't worry, discomfort is where the good stuff starts.

Helpful from a deconstructed perspective

Wonderful book that offers the author's own deep examination of the beliefs he inherited from his Evangelical upbringing. This is a humorous, entertaining, and engaging look at all of the ways Christians can "suck" and how we can do things better. Steele describes himself as a "skeptic pastor" but I found him to be very thoughtful and reverent and sincerely trying to follow the way of Jesus. Check out his UnBelief podcast too.

Great book!

I am so happy that the author himself read this title. You just feel like you are engaging in conversations over coffee rather than reading a book. I appreciated how every single chapter contained stories from his own life and how honest and open he was about his mistakes. So often you’ll hear a pastor say I’m not speaking just to you here; I’m also speaking to myself. And then he’ll share a sort of a vanilla story that’s not very relatable. This book has such relevant information for all of us, no matter where you are on your journey. It has helped me so much on my path away from “right” thinking and “right” theology towards love and inclusivity. I appreciated the references for further reading included at the conclusion as well!

Funny, humbling, honest

I binged this book in a single listen. I love that the author read the entire book himself. I will be recommending this book to my family and friends!

"How to Not Suck as a Christian" by Jeremy Steele is a refreshing and insightful read that truly resonates. Steele's simple and relatable language makes biblical history accessible, allowing readers to grasp complex concepts with ease. His candid anecdotes and personal experiences mirror my own journey growing up in the church, making me feel understood and connected. This book has opened my eyes to new perspectives on the Bible, encouraging a deeper understanding of faith without the heaviness often associated with religious texts. Highly recommend for anyone seeking a more engaging and enlightening approach to Christianity!

This book made me cringe at how I sucked as a Christian throughout my life. It also made me reflect on my evolution as a sucky Christian to a not so sucky Christian, and it makes me want to get back into the Bible with fresh eyes and all the context!
P.S. I found your narration to be quite pleasant.

Wear some steel toe shoes for this.

This was better than I expected. The entire book felt like I was having a real world casual conversation. There was never a point where I was listening and felt judged. I think this was a great change of pace for this type of book. And something I'll probably go back to again in the future.

A pleasant conversation
