The legacy networks that are typically in use by organizations today have an infrastructure that is typically a mix of multiple vendor solutions, platforms, and protocol solutions. This makes the ultimate goal of creating an integrated network ecosystem a difficult if not impossible process for many organizations.
The arrival of Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an approach to building networks using open protocols, such as OpenFlow, that allow globally aware software control to be applied at the edges of the network in order to access network switches and routers that typically would use closed and proprietary firmware.
