This book was designed to reduce mistakes.

Your mistakes with money.

Tiny errors, epic fails and everything in between.

You can do thousands of things right, but make just a few of the errors we discuss, and you destroy much of your portfolio.

If you could learn how to avoid the unforced errors investors make all the time, you would make your life so much richer and less stressful.

The counterintuitive truth is avoiding errors is much more important than scoring wins.

How Not To Invest shows you a few simple tools and models that will help you avoid the most common mistakes people make with their money. Learn these, and you are ahead of 98% of your peers.

Make fewer errors, end up with more money.

We all make mistakes. The goal with this book is to help you make fewer of them, and to have the mistakes you do make be less expensive.

I do not like investing books; most are nonsense, but “How Not to Invest” is different. The title is apt, and the behaviour to avoid is clearly outlined. This book provides an education and learning that would take a lifetime of mistakes to figure out. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in money, and their financial security all without bothering too much about market conditions.

Worth every second. Listen to it.

Enlightening, so many blind spots and obvious mistakes that we all have made. Extremely helpful to any investor at any chapter in their investment life. RWM is one of the best resources for the individual investor today. The books, the podcasts and YouTube vids from RWM are extremely helpful. Must reads and viewing for today’s investors. Great work Barry!

Solid information, even though it is a reiteration of topics covered by others. A standout because of the narration performance and the interesting stories.

I am a big Barry Ritholtz fan. His Masters in Business podcast and other shows associated with his business (Compound and Friends, Animal Spirits. What Are Your Thoughts?) make him someone I respect and admire when it comes to investing. This book is filled with practical and actionable advice, colorful stories, and even more reasons to make investing as boring as possible. I highly recommend it!

The pitfalls of personal investing are many and he rationalizes with you, like a friend, to not fall for the irrationality that exists in your mind, others selling you things, public mania, and commercialized selling of products, etc., etc. I really appreciate it and was surprised to see it was nearly 14 hours to do that. However, working as a financial planner, I know too well all the ways in which people sabotage themselves from reaching financial freedom and have empathy. I learned from this book how to have better counter discussions with clients to perhaps encourage them to persist and stay the course with a lifelong process of investing.

I do disagree with him on the Harvard endowment example, he may have personal knowledge on the events that occurred, but that pivot to lower cost management and future losses was more due to market constraints on private equity. He believes that if they kept paying millions of dollars to money managers they would have continued to earn billions. Those high cost managers-even if kept in power-would have had significant losses from 2008 on. But hey, fantastic book, hope lots of people read.
