Rules for Being a Man:

  • Don't cry
  • Love sport
  • Play rough
  • Drink beer
  • Don't talk about feelings

But Robert Webb has been wondering for some time now: are those rules actually any use? To anyone?

Looking back over his life, from schoolboy crushes (on girls and boys) to discovering the power of making people laugh (in the Cambridge Footlights with David Mitchell), and from losing his beloved mother to becoming a husband and father, Robert Webb considers the absurd expectations boys and men have thrust upon them at every stage of life. Hilarious and heartbreaking, How Not to Be a Boy explores the relationships that made Robert who he is as a man, the lessons we learn as sons and daughters, and the understanding that sometimes you aren't the Luke Skywalker of your life - you're actually Darth Vader.

Story, performance, topics were just spectacular. I very much enjoyed everything, now if I can just get my kids (adult) to listen.

Just Wonderful

Amazing memoir. I read this because I'm a fan of Robert Webb, but even if Ive never heard of him this book would have resonated with me the same. He touches on gender "roles" perfectly as well as genuinely being funny most the time, except the sad parts, which are sad in the right amount.

Amazing Memoir

Having watch Mitchel and Webb and enjoyed their talent and work I read one of David Mitchell’s books and wanted to read one by Rob Webb. He is a talented story teller. His story reveals how he came to be who he is. He is honest, funny and shares the difficult experiences that influenced his craft.

A great read

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read/listened to. It’s moving, funny, painful and enlightening book (though those words really don’t seem to do the book justice) from which I’ve scribbled down many, many, many passages to keep on hand. While it supported and crystallized beautiful many of the thoughts and perspectives I share, I was taken aback and moved to tears by how Mr. Webb, by sharing his own experiences, guided me towards areas I didn’t know I’d been avoiding. This book, more than any other I’ve read, truly feels like LIFE.

Bravo.

One of the Best Books I’ve Ever Read

What I expected was something like Bossypants: a funny person's autobiography and the humorous and awkward anecdotes that lead our lovely protagonist to fame. What I got was a heart-wrenching, hauntingly beautiful, articulate story of a confused person making their way through an emotional minefield. There were a few parts I wasn't even sure I'd be able to finish -- just too painful. That said, it was infinitely relatable. And while I don't know if I'll ever be able to listen to it again, I'm so glad I did once. Even in the hard times, the relatability made me feel less alone in my similar thoughts and struggles.

Heartbreaking

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. Robert Webb is incredibly open about his life and shares his experiences with humour and eloquence. The two extra bits at the end had me laughing out loud at the delivery of the poetry & the exchanges between the three in the discussion; both are a treat to listen to!
This book will stay on my device & recommendation list for a long time.

Stunningly honest and insightful, also entertaining

I love Robert Webb and his brand of dry sardonicism. While humorous, this book is basically part memoir, part exploration of gender roles and expectations, and part therapy session for him- with we the readers (and listeners) as the therapists. The honesty he gives us throughout is cathartic and refreshing.

Absolutely brilliant book about Robert Webb's life - toddler to 'Peep Show' - and his journey through having an abusive childhood with an alcoholic father, having difficulties in relating to other boys, struggling with his mother's death when he was just a teen, and how this all continued to affect him. It's set against the backdrop of the various detrimental effects of the patriarchy on developing girls and boys, and his personal struggles with it.

Webb comes off like a seasoned and talented non-fiction writer. The book is extremely insightful, interesting, intelligent and beautifully written.

I'm really glad I got the audiobook over the print. Webb's narration adds a personal touch and emotion to the stories and reflections that bring them to life.

Brilliant; Cannot Recommend Enough!
