Resumen del Editor

Providing a post-COP26 perspective on the climate emergency, Hothouse Earth: An Inhabitant's Guide acknowledges that it is now practically impossible to keep this side of the 1.5°C dangerous climate change guardrail. The upshot is that we can no longer dodge the arrival of a disastrous, all-pervasive climate breakdown that will come as a hammer blow to global society and economy.

Bill McGuire, Professor of Geophysical and Climate Hazards, explains the science behind the climate crisis, painting a blunt but authentic picture of the sort of world our children will grow old in, and our grandchildren grow up in, a world that we catch only glimpses of in today's blistering heatwaves, calamitous wildfires, and ruinous floods and droughts.

Bleak though it is, the picture is one we must all face up to, if only to spur genuine action—even at this late stage—to stop a harrowing future from becoming a truly cataclysmic one.

comprehensive coverage of climate change outcomes

One could find this book somewhat bleak, but if you already have an understanding of where climate is going, this book may simply confirm your internalized bleak outlook. Otherwise, it is a good listen. The reader is good. What I liked best is how McGuire covered so many different aspects of climate change, more often stated as "climate breakdown". In particular, McGuire links the geological record to where we are now and may soon be in a way that firms up what most people only know from climate models.

Every Little Bit Helps

Our world is monitored more and more by AI systems. This technology observes everything we buy and consume. The more we buy a product the more of that product will show up for consumers. Buy less meat, less will be ordered by the systems. Buy more climate friendly items and more will become available.

This is another eye opening instruction manual on how to help heal the damage. Buy enough of these how to save or world reads and the more will be distributed.

Thank you Mr McGuire for a another tool to help inform the population about this critical issue, our survival.

Ride a bike, plant a tree, grow something to eat and teach the children how precious this pale blue dot really is.

Arrivederci y’all

Frightening and Informative

This book clearly and concisely explains what is likely to happen in the worst case scenario of not getting carbon and methane emissions under control. It breaks myths associated with global warming/climate change and confronts the rose colored glasses portrayal by media organizations. It explains how effects we're seeing TODAY are related to what the future holds and steps we can take today to avoid a complete catastrophic breakdown.

Disappointed

McGuire undercut his own credibility when lies about the solar geo-engineering experiments proposed by Harvard University Professor, David Keith, and instead describes the program as advocating for solar geo. That it explicitly does not do that is obvious to anyone visiting its web page so McGuire knew he was lying about it. Frankly it is shameful coming from a scientist of his caliber.

He also gives misleading descriptions of other programs that have been proposed to respond to global heating while the world economy moves away from dependence on hydrocarbons. That process will take decades as McGuire knows and in fact points out. But rather than look at those proposals to respond to the challenge, he simply stamps his feet and says we have to go faster, as if his doing so will make it happen.

Transition to a non-carbon centered energy production system, is not a matter of political will but of economics. Politics in fact has created idiotic so called solutions like ethanol mixing into gasoline and electric cars both of which raise the demand for fossil fuels at least in anything like the near term.
