I photographed the moment of my husband's death....' So begins Hold Still, a nerve-twisting thriller from best-selling author Tim Adler.

How much do we really know about those we love?

Kate is visiting Albania with her husband, Paul, a much needed break from Paul's stressful website business. 'Hold still,' says Kate, taking a picture as Paul steps onto the hotel room balcony. 'We'll always be together,' Paul responds. Suddenly there is screaming below and a blaring car horn. Kate stares down from the balcony at the broken body of her husband lying lifeless in the street.

Overcome with grief, Kate can't accept the truth of Paul's tragic death and replays the incident over and over again, searching her pictures for a vital clue to what really happened. When she meets the enigmatic Priest at a grief support group, they journey together into a dangerous world of violence and secrets as Kate realises what Paul really meant when he said he would never leave her....

Tim Adler is an author and commissioning editor on The Daily Telegraph who has also written for the Financial Times and The Times. His debut self-published thriller, Slow Bleed, went to number one in the Amazon medical thriller chart while influential review site Crime Book Club made it a Book of the Month.

Its follow-up, Surrogate, has stayed in the top 40 psychological thrillers for over a year and was a Book of the Month on E-thriller.com. The Sunday Times called Adler's most recent nonfiction book, The House of Redgrave, compulsively listenable while The Mail on Sunday called it dazzling.

Adler's previous novel, Hollywood and the Mob, an exposé of how the Mafia has corrupted the movie industry, was Book of the Week in The Mail on Sunday and Critic's Choice in the Daily Mail. Tim is former London editor of Deadline Hollywood, a US entertainment news website.

A nice police thriller for fans of crime novels. It was certainly a breath of fresh air from the excess of domestic thrillers out there, that are becoming a little too much. This is different. It explores more of a criminal side but it does carry some domestic drama. However, I found it to drag a bit, it definitely could have been more fast paced. I wish I had loved it, I did not, but it's an okay book overall.

Good police novel

The story was boring and far fetched. Wild goose chases. Trumped up bad guys. I want my credit back.

Even if your British if you Mary into this kind of culture that’s what you get. Don’t do it.

This primitive country sounds abominable

In terms of a crime novel, this story is well written, entertaining and allows for both suspense and hints toward where things may turn. I enjoyed the story.

However, as a Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who lived in Albania for more than two years in the early 2010s... I’m bummed/disappointed that the author did not give more depth to the Albanian characters. The cold mother-in-law, the evil aunt and all the male characters as gang thugs. Is there organized crime on Albania? Yes. Are there elements of their culture that seem unusual to westerners? Yes. Is it fair to represent an entire nation as cold-hearted and criminal? No. And I’ll even say to do so as a writer is irresponsible. Especially a writer that has clearly done extensive research to infuse Albanian culture, history, food and rituals into the story.

I get it. Crime stories need to have their villains. However as an author from a country (my assumptions here) where they’ve had greater privileges and access to education, employment, opportunity than many Albanians ever will... Im disappointed that another peice of literature is now circling to reinforce the opinion that Albanians are criminals. For 2.5 years I was welcomed, befriended and honored by so many generous, kind, funny, loving and joyful Albanians. The world deserves to hear those stories too.

Entertaining but bummed out by Albanian stereotypes

I really wanted to like this story. I tried. I couldn’t finish it. I just don’t like the story’s where a person makes completely insane choices over and over. It makes the story line unappealing to me.

Wanted to like it.

This was a pretty decent book until the end, which jumped the climax straight to an extremely anticlimactic "what just happened" ending.

Narration was decent as well.

Not sure I'll be keeping this book as I am not sure I'd refer it or ever want to listen to it again.

Pretty Good Until the End

This story was a nice change of scenery., as it takes place in a country I’ve not often read about. The narrator did a good job throughout and he’s to draw the picture well. I always appreciate a storyline I cannot guess right from chapter 1 and though I did suspect a few things, liked having to have them confirmed.

Strong storyline, good narration

It does have some unnecessary details that doesn’t leave anything to the imagination. I’ve been discouraged with another English author but I didn’t want that to leave a bad taste in my mouth. This story has a pace that keeps you interested. Some authors are just meant to write beautiful stories. Mysteries and suspense are a bit more tricky. Everything has to start tying up in the end in a logical and realistic way.

Great Story Line

I loved the performance of the story. I also liked how strong the Katie became even when she thought she could not, she did.
