If you want to discover the influential and captivating history of California, then read on....
California’s transformation into the most populous state in America and the home of some of the country’s richest citizens spread amongst Silicon Valley and Hollywood, was certainly no accident. California has always been one of the most diverse and multicultural states in the United States, way before it was a state at all, and even before the arrival of the Europeans.
With California’s rugged yet diverse terrain, the first settlers spread into hundreds of different tribes, all with their own lifestyles, religions, diets, and culture, much of which was based on the landscape they ended up in.
Over the course of the 18th century, California truly developed into the state we know it as today. Within the century, the region passed through the hands of the Spaniards, the Republic of Mexico, and finally, the United States of America, which warred over acquiring California’s fertile and diverse lands. From the first true economy surrounding the California Gold Rush, the region would evolve into America’s richest and most populous state, a status that is still maintained today.
In this book, you will learn:
- California’s Native American population
- The Spanish exploration of Mexico, which led to the discovery of California
- The colonization of the region of California led by the Spanish church missions
- Mexican California
- The Gold Rush
- The San Francisco earthquake
- The effects of World War I and II on California
- The socio-political reforms that occurred over the course of the 20th century
- California’s technology boom
- How California transitioned into one of the most populous states in America, as well as one of the more diverse and liberal states in the country

For centuries, Denmark “punched above its weight” and was a major player on the European stage. Many know about the Danish Vikings and their voyages of conquest and discovery, but Denmark is more than just those medieval raiders and traders, even though interest in their adventures is at an all-time high today.

From a modern perspective, it may seem that the United States was a major powerhouse since its early days. However, the truth is far from it. This transformation from a weak and relatively poor dominion into a world-class international power was undoubtedly a long process, yet it achieved its peak in the late 19th century. At that time, the US managed to achieve change in many aspects, from economic and social to political and military. This period of growth has become known as the Gilded Age.

Germany is one of the richest and most influential countries in the world, which is amazing when you consider that the nation is only about the size of the US states of Oregon and Washington combined. It’s even more astounding when you consider that at the end of World War II, every major German city (and many minor ones) had been flattened by the Allied bombing campaign. Still more amazing is that the country has gone from international pariah and home of the Holocaust to one of the most well-regarded and humanitarian nations on Earth.

Did you know that the California Gold Rush was the largest mass migration event in the history of the United States of America? More than 300,000 people settled in the previously sparsely populated California. And they all came in the period between 1849 and 1855. But sadly, the people living in California quickly fell into violence, racism, and misogyny.

Huge international companies and corporations are a normal part of our everyday lives today. For most, their unimaginable wealth and power, rivaling even some of the smaller countries of the world, is something we take for granted. Texas is one of the most recognizable states in the United States of America (it is the second-largest, behind Alaska), and it also has a reputation for being unlike any other. This reputation is well-deserved, in part because of the state’s long and often contentious history. From the heyday of the Wild West and the state’s oil boom to the storied Texas Rangers and the construction of one of NASA’s primary facilities, it seems nearly impossible to fully explore everything in the state’s rich past.

California is the most multicultural state in the nation. As John Mack Faragher argues in this concise and lively history, that is nothing new. California's natural variety has always supported diversity, including Native peoples speaking dozens of distinct languages, Spanish and Mexican colonists, gold seekers from all corners of the globe, and successive migrant waves from the eastern states, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Beautifully crafted and elegantly written, Faragher tells the stories of a colorful cast of characters, some famous, others mostly unknown.

It is true that the Vikings were, without a doubt, brutal men living in a brutal age. They did use their skills as warriors to relentlessly attack Europe and the British Isles to increase their wealth and territory, but that is not all the Vikings were, and their contribution to world history is far more than warmongering. In this captivating history audiobook, you'll not only learn about heroic warriors in battle but you'll also discover the remarkable achievements made by the Vikings.

Between 1846 and 1873, California's Indian population plunged from perhaps 150,000 to 30,000. Benjamin Madley is the first historian to uncover the full extent of the slaughter, the involvement of state and federal officials, the taxpayer dollars that supported the violence, indigenous resistance, who did the killing, and why the killings ended. This deeply researched book is a comprehensive and chilling history of an American genocide.

Solid overview of the long history of this state
This audiobook has a very good survey of the various phases of Californian history up to to modern times. As acknowledged at the outset, there is a vast "prehistory" of the area's indigenous peoples, it does give serviceable overview. It is interesting that there is still disagreement about exactly when the first Asian peoples can across the Bering land bridge - from at least ten thousand to 120 thousand years ago.
There is prominent treatment of the long and continued ill treatment of native peoples and other groups of people who were dominated by whatever ruling population was dominate at the time (first Spanish, then Mexican, and then American).
I learned many interesting facts about the state (e.g., the origin of the name, "California", the origin of the state flag, etc.). The book does a really good job explaining driving reasons for the regional differences.
California is a complex state with a storied and complicated history. I really enjoyed how "History of California" created a very clear narrative to make this understandable and memorable.

Great Overview, Not Unbiased
Fantastic, lovely narration. Great overview of the history of this complicated state. However, if you’re looking for unbiased, straight history, this may not be it. Author’s political bias is apparent— which isn’t bad, necessarily, but something to note.

Interesting history
For such a short known history, California has seen a lot of activity, from Indigenous American control to the Spanish moving in to the take over by Mexico and up to today by the United States. From a place that took an average of 6 months to travel to, to a place where thousands of people from all over the world made a mad rush to reach, California continued to change to meet its' new population. California has a unique position in history for being a melting pot that just happened by fate. This history is nicely told here in this book

Just awful
This is the most pathetic history California I have ever read. I doubt that the author has never even been to California and all he took was snippets from other historical books that were way off. Quite frankly it was embarrassing.
