Christine Daae has spent eight years fatherless, alone, and left to fend for herself day in and day out. She has abandoned her dreams of performing on stage and instead works as a tutor and accompanist. On a chance encounter with the new co-owner of the Premier Theater, Raoul Chagny, she is swept once again into the world of theater and into a romance that transcends her wildest dreams. Little does she know, a masked stranger lurks in the shadows and is determined to dominate her will. Just as Christine’s relationship with Raoul blossoms, she is swept away into darkness and imprisoned in a subterranean world. In order to survive, she must wear a façade and, through an intense power struggle, she comes to understand that not all monsters are easy to define. Based on Gaston Leroux’s gothic masterpiece, this dark retelling combines romance with suspense and horror.

WARNING: This book is an exploration of a psychopaths relationship with the object of his obession, therefore Erik is extremely out of character.

This book contains disturbing content. Reader discretion is advised.

This has nothing to do with the original story.
Just the names are the same. I’m was horrified of how terrible and random this Erik’s character was. He was horrible, nothing is like able (maybe that was the point)
It’s hard to think that anyone who loved the original tale would treat the characters like this.

I have nothing against the story being modernized, but this story should have been its own thing. With it trying to reference so many things for original story, it was just random and did not fit.
If Raoul was a biker and this Erik had nothing to do with music…this story would just be another booktok story.

And the point that had me unhinged was when Raoul started crying when he found out that Christian “intimate” with Erik….oh you know, for HER OWN SURVIVAL !! She was missing for months, she was kidnapped, she didn’t want to OBVIOUSLY 🙄
He was crying, until she told him she didn’t want to do to. That pissed me off.
A sexually assaulted/raped survivor should NOT have to feel like they have to justify what happened to them or what they had to do to survive/escape.

This Erik character- the 3rd person talk throughout the book was so not funny. It was annoying, like a child, but later we are told that he is supposed to be as old as her father. (ew)

This story had more to do with Stockholm syndrome than the Beauty and the Beast meme. Even with that said she was a prisoner. it’s normal to be slightly manipulated and brainwashed in that situation.

And yes, after Erik‘s death, it’s going to haunt Christine for a while. He kidnapped and raped her and brainwashed her. She’s gonna need some therapy.

I still think that this Meg was one of Erik’s people who spied for him.

All over the place 😔
