"My second life began when I was kidnapped by two complete strangers...." That the kidnappers are actually Aunt Sandy and Uncle Max makes no difference to 13-year-old Domenica Santolina Doone, better known as Dinnie--she just doesn't want to go. Dinnie's accustomed to change, with her family constantly moving for "opportunity"--but when her aunt and uncle whisk her far away to an international school in Switzerland, she's not sure she's ready to face this "opportunity" alone.

Historia
No one would accuse 11-year-old Caddie Woodlawn of being dainty and ladylike. In spite of her mother’s best efforts, Caddie is as wild as the wind, playing freely and rambunctiously with her two brothers in the Wisconsin backwoods. There are rafts to build and trees to climb and pranks to play. Caddie especially likes to watch her friend Indian John build birchbark canoes at the river. Every day seems wide with possibility - as wide as the frontier. But living on the edge of civilization has its risks, too....

Unbearable
I didn't make it through the first chapter of this. Five-year-old Heidi sounded like a cranky octogenarian. That's just wrong. My little one covered her ears when she heard the character's voice. If it gets better, I wouldn't know. We just couldn't go on.
Peter Batchelor really should avoid voicing female characters. His neutral narrative reading isn't bad, but his character voices are distracting, and every female of any age has a tone both creaky and gravelly. He would be best suited to books that are heavy on narration and light on dialogue. He should absolutely never, ever, attempt to voice the character of a young girl again.
This book cost 48 cents, and I actually asked for a refund. I can't un-hear this monstrosity, but at least this review may save someone else the time and discomfort. You've been warned.
