Love this series, but not my favorite volume

These editors are so prolific I never run out of books to read. I have been thrilled with their books about first responders and ghosts, as they are the first excellent spooky audiobooks I’ve found, since the Scary Stories Trilogy. This book didn’t rate as high as the rest, for me. Some of the stories are good, while others are hard to believe, and a bit hokey. I’m an adult, but have worked as a teacher and often enjoy children’s and youth books, which this is geared toward. I’d say middle school through high school students might find it interesting. However, I find it annoying when kids are depicted as having what I call a “valley girl” accent, having family and friends in California. For some reason, youth books from all over the US are written in this style, and this hasn’t really been youth culture since the 1980s, though it continued to be used in popular media from the 1980s-2000s. By 2010, at the latest, I would expect to hear a more hip hop style slang, or any of the regional US dialects, not the Valley girl/boy “snotty kid” slang that was popularized by the character Gertie in, “E.T.” It makes it sound dated and out of touch. It’s partially the narration, but I hear it in the stories, as well. There were a couple of touching or friendly ghost stories, but this book had themes of malevolent spirits and violence that I don’t enjoy or think are appropriate for children. I feel that cautionary tales or parable-style ghost lore depicting violence can be ok, as long as they teach something. For example, urban legends that warn against recklessness, and teach that there are people in the world with ill intent. I do prefer benevolent ghosts, or ones that are only angry because they want help…no evil spirits for me, unless evil does not persist, or win out. Some of the stories in this book have malevolent spirits that are disturbing. Some are just a bit boring or not credible. Others are pretty good. If you don’t like creepy dolls, I’d skip it! If it’s hard for you to stomach Nickelodeon-style kid culture I’d skip it, also. I do appreciate always having something to read, with this series, but I’d rather wait longer between books, so the editors can choose only the best!
