Resumen del Editor

From the best-selling author of Yellow Crocus and Mustard Seed comes the empowering novel of two generations of American women connected by the past and fighting for a brighter future.

It's 1894. Jordan Wallace and Sadie Wagner appear to have little in common. Jordan, a middle-aged black teacher, lives in segregated Chicago. Two thousand miles away, Sadie, the white wife of an ambitious German businessman, lives in more tolerant Oakland, California. But years ago, their families intertwined on a plantation in Virginia. There, Jordan's and Sadie's mothers developed a bond stronger than blood, despite the fact that one was enslaved and the other was the privileged daughter of the plantation’s owner.

With Jordan's mother on her deathbed, Sadie leaves her disapproving husband to make the arduous train journey with her mother to Chicago. But the reunion between two families is soon fraught with personal and political challenges.

As the harsh realities of racial divides and the injustices of the Gilded Age conspire to hold them back, the women find they need each other more than ever. Their courage, their loyalty, and the ties that bind their families will be tested. Amid the tumult of a quickly changing nation, their destiny depends on what they're willing to risk for liberation.

Excellent!

As a stand alone historical novel or, as a follow-up to The Mustard Seed, Golden Poppies is worthwhile, entertaining and moving.
Bahni Turpin, as always, is a marvelous reader, making this, as with all she does, come alive.

Laila Ibrahim has, once again, carried me into deeper understanding. If not always a comfortable journey, if a good bit shocking, angering and painful, the way is also described with Love, Joy, tenderness and ever-appreciation for Life. That depth of truth is a place I wish to go. Thank you.

I look forward to more from Ms Turpin and Ibrahim.

A tapestry of History!

This book literally swept you back in time and made you long for the desires of those who paved the way for where we are today. Many sacrifices have been made and this book honors their courage to take the 1st step.

History, cultures, prejudices, freedom fighters

I grew up in a different time - and in the Deep South. So many of the comments and experiences that emerge and are highlighted in this book ring so very true for someone who grew up in the 50s and 60s. I now live in the vicinity of Oakland, California. It is simultaneously heartening and saddening to be touched by so much of the history that occurred in the course of the lives described in this book. Yes it’s a novel, but so much of it is true if in perspective if not through specific facts. A worthwhile read or listen for anyone who cares about freedom and the ultimate end of racial and gender-based prejudice.

A bit contrived and preachy

I’ve enjoyed other Laila Ibrahim novels, however, to me, this story tried too hard to incorporate events and issues of the time in the storyline. I’m glad I completed the series and was interested to follow the next generation of characters

Incredible story, characters & OMG the narration!

The emotional depth, and palpable strengths and weaknesses of these characters are powerfully woven throughout an incredible story & OMG the narration! An incredible glimpse into the past that everyone should read.

Golden Poppies

Very good continuation of these beautiful families and their history. I am disappointed though not surprised regarding various parts of this particular book. I also wished Susan B Anthony’s part in this book was not fiction. But no surprise there either.
I will download the last book if this series and hopefully offer a full view of my appreciation for such a large part of history.

Loved It

I have read all 3 of these books and was able to turn off the world for a few hours a day, which is so hard to do most days.

I will be re-reading all three with just as much giggles, tears (happy and sad)

I'm about to turn 57 and still can not wrap my mind around the way people then and now are treated.

No one is totally free until the good Lord above has our bedroom ready and he calls us Home.
