Resumen del Editor

Blue Magic, the latest designer drug linked to a rash of overdoses, might explain the needle mark on the arm of a young woman found dead in her Kansas City apartment. But when star reporter Rich Azadian digs deeper, the clues point to a far more explosive story: MaryLee Stock was a special protege of evangelical megapastor and power broker Cobalt Becker, who is poised to deliver his followers and the presidency to a firebrand right-wing senator in the next election. When Azadian sets out to prove that MaryLee's death was no accident and she may have been carrying Becker's genetically enhanced baby, the stakes become life itself. In 2023 America - bankrupt, violently divided by the culture wars, and beholden to archrival China - the rules of the game are complicated. With the danger mounting, the dead bodies of young women piling up, Chinese agents circling, and the US Department of National Competitiveness moving in to quash his investigation, Azadian's only option is to go rogue, assemble a team of brilliant misfits like himself, and begin the fight of his life to find out who is killing these women and why, and if any others like them may still be alive.

A Great Listening Experience

This audiobook was interesting and entertaining. It also shone a spotlight on the many ethical and religious issues surrounding genetic and stem cell therapy. The positive and negative aspects of genetic sciences are highlighted, as well as the ease that can used to justify whatever side of the debate that an individual might prefer.

Would not recommend

The narrator's voices are awful. All of them. I could barely finish the story because I spent so much time cringing at the audio. Also, I was going to vomit if I heard, "baby" one more time. No one calls their SO baby so much.

Very enjoyable

This was a fun book. Living in Kansas City made it all the more fun. I’m actually excited that there’s a second book with these characters. Guess what I’m listening to next?

An investigative procedural

Interesting intro into the concept of genetic engineering and how that might play out between modern geopolitics and religion. However, where I was expecting a geo political thriller, what was offered is a rather passive procedural investigation of a political scandal. As we fallow a main protagonists (who is a journalist) investigations into the murder of a young woman, we get more of a comment on the connection between journalism and government interests than on the new frontier of genetic engineering. As for the voice actor, I enjoyed his choice of characterisation and pace. All and all, I wasn't blown away but it left a lot to think about genetic engineering and how it will effect our future and it's coming influence on geo politics. Thus a fun read and kind of a realistic depiction of how this technology might start out in near future.

lacking something

the story in general is pretty good, but I feel like it's lacking something in the end. the narrator does a good job, but at times there's not that much distinction between the characters. but still worth a 4 overall, especially if you can pick this up from the audible plus catalogue.

Might read better as a book than audio

The story is intriguing. the narration did not do it justice. all men in power had the same low pitch , and you will get a shot of the worst British accent ever attempted by an American.

Narration is distracting

I don’t even know what this story is about because the narration is so terrible and distracting that I can’t follow what he’s talking about. 🤷‍♀️

Just…Ok

This book was annoying.

First; the main character is nobody that anyone would like be be around. Maybe that’s harsh, but when the author, Jamie Metzl, goes into his head- it’s nothing but stream of consciousness bs that has little to do with literally anything, let alone the story.

The book takes place in the distant future of 2023 and the big thing that’s changed is that everyone wears a “UD” - basically a bigger Apple Watch.

Andy Caploe as narrator— grated on my nerves pretty much the entire time I listened. Can he do voices? Sure! Do any of them sound realistic? Not at all!

I couldn’t even tell you much about the story except that the main character is a journalist on the case of mutations in genes and babies…eh. Oh, and there are a couple of pointless sex scenes.

I don’t think I’ll be reading anymore of this author
