I'm a huge horror fan and listen to a lot of extreme stories. I would rate the graphic horror about a three on a scale of one to five. As you get through the various books, more like collections of chapters, the violence and gore definitely ramp up and it made me enjoy the story more and more. I was really happy with the way the story ended. Kinda expected aspects of it, but it was a solid ending that I think was perfect for how the story developed.
I have read and heard a lot worse and am not sure why genital mutilation is where “extreme” horror has to default to. That is like all “extreme” funny jokes having to be dirty or forced to use foul language. The best ones don’t. In the end, be warned, many people won’t have the stomach for this type of writing.
I felt that this story was heavily influenced from the Saw movies from the start, but developed its own plot as it progressed. The overall plot was decent, even though some of it seemed a bit forced just to be able to arrive at the graphic scenes. The only odd part is that there is a romance piece that was out of place, yet still worked, especially given the circumstances of the two meeting. Partners would have been fine, but “lovers”, a word used way too much in this book, just didn’t sit well with me until I finished the entire book. There was a lot of language that didn’t seem to fit to me. Not sure how many times I heard the word poo, a childish word, mixed with graphic torture threw me off a bit. Not sure how many different body parts leaked a white ooze. I found many times that either the actual descriptions or dialogue were not fitting with other aspects of the story.
The narrator did a good job with the narration aspects of the story, but I didn’t think his conversation cadence matched the dialogue. Came off a bit glitchy and less natural. He provided decent character voices, really liked Donny’s voice, that helped the overall energy of the story.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

I chose this series because I listened to the Raised by a Killer series and actually did enjoy it. This one sounded interesting so I thought I’d give it a try, but it was not good. I noticed a lot of things that would have bothered me before from the other series but maybe didn’t because the characters in Raised by a Killer were more interesting and the story was more interesting so I let a lot of stuff slide in that one. The characters in this book were just obnoxious and boring. I couldn’t bring myself to care at all about what happened to any of them. There were a lot of grammatical things and just odd wording that bothered me. If I had the actual book in front of me I could give many examples. But just one that really bugged me is that people “shake their head” for no and yes. Except for in one instance, someone actually nodded. So nodding does exist in this universe. Except it only happened once because after that people continued to “shake their head yes” which just irritated me to no end. I know it’s a silly thing but nodding is yes, shaking is no. You wouldn’t need to add “yes” or “no” every time to indicate which it is because people generally know. Which would cut out a lot of unnecessary words. On that same note, there was a lot of repetition in descriptions. Like saying a drug addict looks like a drug addict. Okay, what does a drug addict look like? I am an addict and I’ve met many addicts and we don’t all look the same. There’s also times where they use the same word twice in one sentence when describing something. I am trying to remember a few specific examples but I can’t right now. Maybe I’m being nitpicky, but it happens so often that it started to grate on my nerves. There were other things too but I don’t have the text in front of me and I’ve been listening to this book over the span of several days so I can’t remember everything. I might come back and edit this review if I think of more stuff. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this. Unless…

I swear every time I put this on, I fell asleep faster than I ever have before, which is why it took me longer than usual to finish it. I have always had trouble falling asleep so I’ve been listening to this book before bed to help me sleep. The narrator’s voice is so bad for this genre (I can’t even think of any genre it would work for unless it’s books for helping you fall asleep). It was difficult to listen to really. When he tries to do women’s voices, it’s absolutely horrible. I just want to scream, please don’t try to do women’s voices because you make them sound whiny and irritating. Then again, the characters are already written to be really obnoxious so maybe that works. I don’t know this narrator and never heard him before but heis definitely not a voice actor. The pacing is totally off. He pauses in the weirdest places where a pause is not supposed to be and then doesn’t pause when you expect a pause should be. It honestly sounds like they just found some random guy and asked him to read a book he never read before. He very clearly stumbles over some parts, which was a new experience for me. Maybe I am spoiled by the many amazing narrators that I’ve heard over the years but it’s difficult to really get immersed in a book when the narration is this bad. It sounds like a bored English teacher reading a book he doesn’t like to some kids who aren’t interested in hearing it. I don’t typically write bad reviews even for books that aren’t great. I write reviews generally for things that either really amaze me in their greatness or are just so bad that I can’t keep it to myself. You can guess which category this one falls into.

I had a lot more to say before I started writing this but since it’s the middle of the night, I am going to leave it there for now. Maybe I’ll come back to it and add more specifics about what I didn’t like, but maybe not. Only time will tell. Suffice it to say, I would not recommend this book. Maybe reading the book yourself is a different experience. I don’t know and don’t plan to find out. It’s not interesting enough to make me want to buy a copy. The narration just makes it so much worse and I am very disappointed in the entire experience.

I could not stand the narrator. I did not understand the story and how they are related because of this. Purchased the whole series to listen in one sitting, but gave up after an hour. Disappointing.
