A Thrilling Blend of Cli-Fi and Post-Apocalyptic

In J.R. Tate’s latest novel, Fury, I was treated to an electrifying experience that seamlessly blends climate fiction (Cli-Fi) with post-apocalyptic intensity. As a long-time fan of the author’s work, I was thrilled to dive into another J.R. Tate creation, and once again, her storytelling prowess did not disappoint.

As an avid lover of Cli-Fi, I have often found it challenging to come across audiobooks that explore this genre effectively. However, Fury not only delves into the captivating world of climate fiction but also manages to make it come alive through vivid storytelling and gripping narration. The storms that were described were insane and honestly, with the way things have been going – it felt like it could be less fiction and more non-fiction.

Fury throws readers directly into the maelstrom of the Southern United States while it’s currently being ravaged by violent storms (a Hurricane in January if I remember correctly) along with tornados and massive wind storms), immediately evoking memories of the intense film “The Day After Tomorrow” and the heart-pounding tornado action of “Twister.” This fast-paced and thrilling introduction sets the stage for what unfolds as a tale of survival in a radically changed world.

Tate’s portrayal of the power and devastation of these storms is commendable, leaving readers with a visceral understanding of the forces at play. However, Fury becomes more than just a climate fiction story. It quickly evolves into a post-apocalyptic adventure, exploring the challenges and resilience of the characters in this unforgiving landscape.

One of the author’s notable strengths lies in her ability to craft believable and relatable characters. In Fury, the cast of survivors comes to life with their unique struggles and triumphs. Some characters are so well-defined that they practically leap off the page, leaving a lasting impression, even if not always in the most favorable way.

While Fury ventures beyond the traditional boundaries of Cli-Fi, Tate skillfully weaves together elements of two captivating genres, creating a narrative that is both thrilling and thought-provoking. The blend of environmental catastrophe and post-apocalyptic survival makes for an enthralling read that keeps readers engaged until the very end (and wanting more since it appears to be book one in a series).

I did want to call out that I enjoyed most of Brad Holbrook’s performance. There were a few moments where he was utilizing some voice modulation (cell phone, bad connections, etc) where it probably wasn’t needed – it did add to the drama a bit, but made it heard to hear and follow the story. Outside of that, I thought he did a great job.
