From the Heart of an Abandoned Daughter is about the trauma of family violence. It highlights the inner struggle of the author’s childhood attempt to cope with a terrorizing father and a mother who was so focused on survival that she had to block her own feelings and, consequently, disconnect from her children, leaving them to feel emotionally abandoned rather than protected.
Without passing judgment on her parents, Helen tells the story of what happened and how she coped by creating strategies for survival that then became crippling patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving in her adult life. She explains these patterns and offers resources for personal change.
This audiobook helps women who grew up with family violence understand its effects on their adult lives, find hope for healing, and feel empowered to rewrite their own life narrative.

Amazing book by an amazing person Hard to put down
What made the experience of listening to From the Heart of an Abandoned Daughter the most enjoyable?
I couldn't read the book any other way than by listening to the narration by Helen. She puts you at ease even while describing things that shouldn't happen to any child, ever.
What was one of the most memorable moments of From the Heart of an Abandoned Daughter?
I love that Helen had a place to go to when things became overwhelming. Into the woods, the most peaceful place to be.
What does Helen C. Gennari bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narration is so calming. Just listening to Helen is something everyone will enjoy

Being able to come out of something so tragic and be able to live a normal life.

Amazing book, by an amazing person. Anyone that has ever been mentally abused will understand this book and find it easy to empathize with the writer. Love it.
