From Loving One to One Love: Transforming Relationships Through A Course in Miracles is not another how-to-fix-it guide to relationships. The Course's take on relationships is radically different from that of the rest of the world. Relationships are not really about "love" if by love we mean idealization and specialness. They are not merely agreements negotiated between two parties to promote survival and contentment. Rather, according to the Course, relationships are classrooms for enlightenment: for breaking the ego's grip on the mind and awakening to the true Self. Seen in this light, we don't "get" love from a partner nor do we have to give up anything in order to get it. We don't hunt for it out there in the world. The love comes first, from within, and then infuses all of our relationships, changing their purpose from egoic specialness to holiness.

In order to be open to such love, however, we must do the work that the Course calls "forgiveness." We release our judgments and grievances about others in the understanding that by freeing them we free ourselves. The result is love beyond anything we can imagine: a universal experience of love that's not limited to any one special person or group but shines on all alike.

Calling all Course Students

While viewing a Q&A webinar from The Foundation for Inner Peace, the official publishers of A Course In Miracles, I first learned of Dr. Rosenthal, who is it’s Co- President and to my mind, the heir apparent to the lineage of blessed Souls who did the work of birthing, preserving and distributing the Course worldwide. This led me to some of his other of his You Tube videos and eventually to this book.

Not only was Dr. Rosenthal there at the very beginning and in direct relationship with the scribes and the family of publishers, he fluently speaks the language of the Course and has a grasp on the meaning and implications of the teachings. To our good fortune, he also has over 30 years of experience as a psychotherapist counseling couples and has seen the ego at its’ worst, with a preponderance of patients with DID, Dissociative Identity Disorder, or multiple personalities. He uses this as a metaphor for the condition all individuals suffer, in thinking of ourselves as split from the Mind of God.
He brings his experience to bear by teaching the Course, (not interpreting as some teachers do, it but actually using the language of the Course to shed light,) in a very accessible gentle, understandable and humorous way.

I would add this book to the Canon of Literature produced by the best Course Teacgers, including Dr. Kenneth Wapnick, who indeed mastered the subject and taught it masterfully in his “Journey through A Course in Miracles,” and lecture series.

For students of the Course, new and advanced, who want the Peace of God, Dr. Rosenthal brings it succinctly down to the dichotomy: One of the Other. Either you identify with the world of the ego, whose promise is suffering and death, or you recognize your reality as not a body but eternal Divinity: a thought in the Mind of God, inseparable, indivisible and safe at Home in God which is perfect eternal Love, having a dream of separation.

Any Course student who grasps bottom line of the Course recognizes what Jesus is offering and is elated by the implications of TRUTH. Actually, it’s almost too much for our limited ego minds to grasp: the joy of Wholeness; life without separation.

This Opus Magnum from the One who speaks as the Voice for God, the Holy Spirit, (sometimes in Iambic pentameter,) says the work is simple but not easy.

Dr. Rosenthal helps make it easier by showing us the bag of tricks the ego employs to keep us separate and in hell, which is what we make of the present moment by our unloving thoughts, and exposes the deal-making that comprises our relationships. The idea of relationship is itself an idea of separation because there is only One of us here and no Other. He unpacks the special Love and special Hate we make of everything in our world and teaches us how to form “truly loving relationships; how to make our current relationships more loving: and then, once we’ve managed that, learning how to love as God loves.” That is a lot to get from a book, as Course students know.
He uses language and examples from our modern world and his psychotherapy practice in ways that are so relatable, and yet he is strictly uncompromising in his demonstration of the Absolute Non-Duality that is the heart of the teachings of the Course. In fact, he discusses all the major tenets of the Course including Grievances, Forgiveness, Atonement, and how to find real Peace by undoing the ego.
This is the mark of a true teacher of God. Reading this is the latest in the curriculum of the Holy Spirit, who extends love and shares ideas, which never leave their Source.

I thank Dr. Rosenthal and the Foundation for Inner Peace. We all owe our Gratitude, especially to the Holy Spirit Who loves us unconditionally and sees us for who we are.
