Young writers, journalists, and adventurers such as Katya Cengel flocked from the West eastward to cities like Prague and Budapest, seeking out terra nova. Despite the region’s appeal, neither Kyiv in the Ukraine nor Riga in Latvia was the type of place you would expect to find a 22-year-old Californian just out of college. I couldn’t handle the narrator —who seems to read everything way too chipper — she’s all wrong for this book. So I read this one with my eyes and it was an excellent story. The one star review is clearly due to the narrator, not the writer. The narrator is key and can influence a story in big ways.
