Good book

I enjoyed the story and will be starting the next one immediately after this review.

The series has an unsatisfactory ending

Don't expect the story to be tidily completed. I'm OK with that if I have prior knowledge and don't expect more. Another reviewer compared it to the ending in the Dark Tower series. You go on an epic journey with characters you become invested in and are left feeling "huh"?

I wasn't comfortable with the North Koreans as major human villains. I don't see them having the population to do as much collaborating as they did. I found they're being brought up so frequently jarring and xenophobic.

Some people raved about the opening chapter but it struck me as very dark and disagreeable. The six-book set was on my Wish List but every time I listened to the sample from the first chapter I put it back. Greg Tremblay was the only reason I revisited it. I was happy to see the story in Audible Plus.

A prequel or prologue would have been nice. I would have rated it higher except for the way the series ended.

Not Bad

I wasn't sure I was going to make it through this book after the first chapter. One of the first things I noticed was the narrator's exclusion of the middle T in certain words. Extremely annoying. And I was thinking it was going to sound like a Si-Fi Harlequin romance after the wrinkled old lady sex scene. Looking back though, I suppose it did help with building the main character. The story started slow, but picked up along the way. By the end of the book I was pretty interested in the story. I became interested in a couple of the other characters too. I'll listen to the next book and see how it goes. I thought this book had a good mixture of character building and action. Hopefully the next book will do the same and it will build on the other companions.

its been a fantastic journey thus far, just a little over halfway and it feels like I'm in the book, a part of the grunts.

Audio Book Anxiety

When ever i pick a new book I have the worse anxiety. The fear i wont like content or the narrator but this book played out well.

The narrator delivered the right amount of vocal tone change to hear the character change and the Author delivered content in a space setting I enjoyed. Decent characters and overall a believable plot.

Give it a chance.

Different kind of sci-fi

If the beginning of this story doesn’t grip you immediately this series won’t be for you. Bobby Adair writes sci-fi with a lot more relationship building than most especially in military sci-fi. There’s action in a few points but like I’d imagine space to be, and I remember of the military, a lot of downtime. Adair uses the time to develop complex characters. Usually below a 4.5 star rating I won’t give it a try but this was well worth my time. Greg Tremblay does a fantastic job of differentiating voices and doing a decent female voice which is rare. I feel every time this plays being “included” I’m robbing the author of a well deserved credit.

REALLY GREAT

Being a sucker for stories from "the black" since Firefly, made this easily enjoyable for me! Having had Audible for about a month now, I really appreciate how many stories there are to entertain one. This story is a classic revenge/revolution-type joint. Major Kane is a dedicated, self-proclaimed badass, like any story needs. He uses his advantage as a hybrid, and his experience in the factory, joined by his hatred for his oppressors to bring a fight unlike that they've ever experienced. Fighting a war on two fronts, he proves he's ready to put it all on the line! Characters like this are always the most fun for me to revel in. His drive and determination to reclaim his people and his world are things I value IRL. Thanks for this tale! Can't wait to get into sequels!

intriguing... good solid story

Poor story

But well narrated. The sex was ugly and unnecessary and the science was very poor. I will definitely think twice before purchasing anything else from this author.

Engaging from chapter 1

This book hooked me in about 5 minutes! I was very impressed. Right from the start the story is compelling, and it never slows down, I binged this first book in a day and I'm sure the series won't take me long. Very impressive writing!

As for the reader, in a world where R.C. Bray has ruined other readers for me, this guy impressed me! The way he read really conveyed the beaten down mentality of the MC and the world he lives in. And yet, he can switch to be just DRIPPING with sarcasm when needed! I would say they only thing he could improve on is more variance in voices for female characters. But again, R.C. Bray has set a high bar. This reader was a great choice for this book and i really enjoyed his performance!
