Running with the Train

Sarah has always been lonely. Searching for a love she's begun to believe will never come. Her family and friends depend, need her, but they can't give her what she wants. True, eternal love. Like the wolves have.

So she goes on an adventure of a lifetime to the Grand Canyon; rides the train from Williams to the South Rim and sees these huge wolves running alongside in the evening twilight; scurrying unbelievably below on the Canyon's ledges among the trees. She's told there are no wolves but she hears their haunting cries. No one else sees or hears them. Just her.

And if you were a white witch with the magical powers to make it happen...and the secret of how to do it, would you?

Too Close to the Edge....

Artist Penelope had been looking forward to going with her husband, sister and brother-in-law to see the Grand Canyon...even though she was terrified of heights and, when she got there, couldn't bear to get too close to the edge. She watched people balancing on one foot, acting foolish, taking photos, oblivious of the death waiting below them. It scared her.

Especially when a woman relates a story of a small child that fell into the Canyon the day before. Over the edge.

Then she sees a young girl go over the rim and no one will believe her.

For there was no child that had died - that day anyway.

Was she seeing things that weren't there, or was there another explanation?

Wonderfully crafted tales!

These stories are far from spooky, what they are is beautifully crafted tales. I loved every moment of the journey. Ms Griffith is a wonderful storyteller who enchants with every word!

The Ghost Brother jumps around and keeps you guessing. It starts of quite jarring but quickly brings you up to speed. There were several different routes it could have taken, such a delightfully twisted tale.

Running With the Train is an all too short story. I would love to see this expanded and find out what happens after the leap!

The Banshee and the Witch is a bittersweet journey through a woman's extended lifetime. Again not spooky but a lovely tale.

Too Close to the Edge, this one was a bit spooky. I was all a tither to see what the outcome would be!

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Wendy Tremont King,who is great. She has a wonderful tone and really suits the stories. She helps weave the tales around you and pull you inside the enchanting words. A perfect pairing of reader and story!

The stories are not really spooky or scary but they had delicious twists and turns. I loved them and found a couple far too short. I can only imagine how great they would be with more detail! I am eager to read more of this gifted storyteller!

Really entertaining stories from great narrator

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Four Spooky Short Stories is a aptly named for 4 eerily read stories about dead people and wherewolves. The narraor, Wnedy King, has a greart voice for these stories--serious, a bit gloomy, a bit termorous. I would definiteyl recomend this book to a friend, although I didn't think the stories were that spooky.

If you’ve listened to books by Kathryn Meyer Griffith before, how does this one compare?

I have read Kathryn Meyer Griffith before and find her to be a fine, smooth author. She wrote this equally well--I just would have named the book differently, perhaps.. Stories for a dark, dank night, as these stories evoked that image for me.

Was Four Spooky Short Stories worth the listening time?

This book was worth the listening time. I listened on an evening walk and it heightened the sounds around me.

I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook. The storie are short but very spooky. Great stories for halloween.

This is such a great collection of short stories, which I’d recommend to anyone who loves a good scare. The stories give the perfect set up for the thrill, and the narrator’s voice is perfect for keeping you on the edge of your seat. Spooky!!

I enjoyed all 4 spooky stories.The story lines are scary enough. The narrator could have given more expression in her voice. All in all it was a good audiobook.

Great stories for a stormy night around campfire

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys ghostly tales or spooky stories to share with friends.
I listened to it on a rainy afternoon which was the perfect atmosphere.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite story was the Witch and The Banshee. Of all the stories it seemed the most complete and I would enjoy revisiting it, perhaps hearing more.
Each of these spooky stories has its own virtues.
Every one was satisfying.

What about Wendy Tremont King’s performance did you like?

She had the proper amount of emotion and fluctuation to keep my full attention.
I appreciated the variations in vocal quality she gave each character.
She gave them personality.

If you could take any character from Four Spooky Short Stories out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would love to spend time with the Snarky cat!
There are several characters I could pleasantly have a quality conversation with and enjoy their company.

This was an enjoyable way to spend a rainy afternoon.
I had intended to listen as I was doing household chores, but I really enjoyed the stories and the narration, so I sat back with a cat on my lap, a couple dogs at my feet, and enjoyed being read to.

Decent stories but poor reader

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. Did not feel spooky to me and I did not care for the reader.

What didn’t you like about Wendy Tremont King’s performance?

Overall their wasn't enough inflection in her voice in most of the stories. I could not "feel" the emotions the characters were trying to express. In horror emotion can be critical.

This was a decent collection of short stories. I think in the end most of them simply weren't to my taste. The author is good with descriptive phrases and could paint a scene with words. However I sometimes felt the dialog was lacking.

Of the four stories in the book the first was my favorite a creepy story about what the afterlife could be like.
The second was, to me at least, not spooky at all. It was simply the setup for a paranormal romance.
The third again seemed largely about romance but did have a little twist in the end that I enjoyed.
The fourth while involving ghosts and phobias just didn't strike me as spooky.

I think many people may enjoy these stories, but as for me I apparently need something a bit different in order to feel spooked.

The woman on the train. Haunting.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The title says it all. Spooky. That is a very specific word in the genre. Not Horror (violent), not a thriller (high action), but spooky (haunting atmosphere).

Love this book, love the author. Performance was also excellent.

A good attention holding, time flying time!

Where does Four Spooky Short Stories rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Ms. King does an amazing job with character voices. I could easily picture in my mind everyone of Ms. Griffith's well written characters coming alive in my imagination. Ghost BrotherVery well written. It kept me off-balanced and every time I thought that I figured this one out, Ms. Griffith threw another curve ball! Highly originally and beautifully written.Running with the TrainHaving been in the area around the Grand Canyon, Ms. Griffith artistically and acuritally descriptions one of the US's natural treasures. I felt like I was IN Yellowstone alongside the character. This one was predictable, and I admit to a little bit of disappointment after Ghost Brother's wonderful tale. It felt slightly rushed, as if Ms. Griffith was unable to devote the same energy level to this story as she had on the previous one. The Banshee and the WitchMs. Griffith bounced back brilliantly with this tale. Just when I had it all figured out - I found that I hadn't a clue to where she was heading with this particular tale. An enjoyable, spell-casting that left me satisfied at the end!Too Close to the Edge.... Another wonderful tale! While this story deals with one of many phobias that effect us, it was very written. I found this one to more directed at the female audience rather then in general. A wonderful piece.
