Resumen del Editor

Love a good horror story?

Then Folie will scare you senseless!

When Dr. Jane Lee, a recent graduate, takes her very first position as a psychiatrist at Southern States Mental Institute in Memphis, Tennessee, she gets more than she had bargained for. The idyllic images she had created in her mind while in school of treating the mentally ill clash immediately and drastically with the reality of the practice in real life. From the filthy, creepy, neglected facility in which she now works and the attitude of those in the mental health industry itself to the haunting madness of her first-ever patient, Matilda Rose, nothing is as she had imagined it would be.

As the story unfolds, Dr. Lee finds Matilda's psychosis, based around an ancient Chinese legend, to be far more chilling than anything she had encountered in training. And worse, it seems to be spreading to others - a situation described in the psychiatric journals as folie, or mass hysteria.

Will Dr. Lee be able to resist the pull of her patient's overwhelming psychosis and find a way to save her? Or will the good doctor fall prey herself and join the ranks of those who have already been drawn into the eerie and unsettling world of Matilda Rose?

Great listen

Great story, with a sense of impending doom that drives the story forward.

This is old school southern gothic, where the horror is implied and the mood permeates the book.

Theo Holland does an excellent job narrating, conveying the different characters and mood.

Spine Tingling

I love how this story is set in the Memphis, TN area....as this brings me back home. However, it doesn't really come into play in the story. I know....random fact that has no basis on the book. HAHA!!! Now to the actual story......the author did an amazing job. He really seemed to know a lot about the mind and psychosis. You would think he either studied up really well to write this book or was in the field himself. I can't say the book scared me....but it was more of a creepy, bone chilling, spine tingling sensation I got as I was listening to it. The author and narrator did such a good job working together to make you feel like you were there in the room watching from a dark corner as all this is going on. Almost like you are one of the visions they are seeing....yet not interferring...just watching. Analyzing the situation and theories with them and the whole time hoping you don't start getting pulled in too deep too. It's just a weird feeling this story gives you. I also enjoyed the ending and how even after all the explanations, you were still left with so many questions and doubts. Wondering if you really fully understood everything or if there was so much more to it. I wish they would have continued it but at the same time I was glad when it was over. It excited me, creeped me out, broke my heart at times, and even angered me at times. If you like horror then this book probably isn't what you are looking for. If you like the weird and creepy....unknown phenomenon....then you will love it. The voices and characters the narrator created from the authors description really brings the chills out even more than if you were just reading the book so I definitely advise you to get the audio version. YIKES!!!!!

Wonderfully Upsetting

I love a good horror story and for some reason I especially love - pardon my language - F***ed up horror. The most messed up book I've ever read, and therefore my favorite, was The Long Walk by Stephen King. "Folie ... " has officially taken it's place. I never thought that could happen and somehow M.S. Barnes and Theo Holland together made it happen. The concept is terrifying and there are plot twists - the best plot twist are the ones you can't predict and let me tell you that when a particular one occurred I said, "That's f***ed up" out loud to absolutely nobody.

Good Listen

Based on the title of the book I wasn't sure but I decided to give it a try. It was good, keep me engaged and moved along at a steady pace. It didn't seem drawn out at all. It also kept me guessing about the true plot of the story and what was really going on in the asylum. I would recommend this book. I don't want to give away too much so I'm not going go into a lot of detail but this book definitely had some twists that I honestly didn't see coming.

I was given a free copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.

Captivating story.

Freshly minted psychiatrist, Dr. Lee is ready to change the world...at least the world inside the walls of Southern States Asylum. She is especially drawn to the newest patient, a young woman named Matilda Rose. She believes that she can help Matilda, in spite of the objections of the senior staff. Dr. Lee solicits the help of her mentor as the condition of her being allowed to treat Matilda. As time marches on, the atmosphere of the asylum becomes downright creepy and put of control. The ending is mind blowing...and, yep, creepy...I loved it! My one complaint is that sometimes the technical jargon became a bit much.
