Superintendent Teresa Battaglia, a detective with a background in criminal profiling, is called to investigate. Battaglia is in her mid-60s, her rank and expertise hard-won from decades of battling for respect in the male-dominated Italian police force. While she's not sure she trusts the young city inspector assigned to assist her, she sees right away that this is no ordinary case: buried deep in these mountains are whispers of a dark and dangerous history, possibly tied to a group of eight-year-old children toward whom the killer seems to gravitate. 

As Teresa inches closer to the truth, she must also confront the possibility that her body and mind, worn down by age and illness, may fail her before the chase is over.

Could not get into it

So sorry, but I tried hard several times to listen to this and the narrator’s voice just sent my mind elsewhere. I finally gave up. Maybe one of those books that needs to read.

Fantastic Story/Narration!!

This is the best book I’ve read in quite some time. Intriguing mystery set in Italy, excellent narration. I would like to see a sequel.

Fabulous Read!!

A complicated but entrancing story. Extremely well narrated. The writer has the ability to draw you a picture in your mind of what the little village looks like and how the mountains surround the valley. It's a difficult story but one you cannot stop listening to no matter how hard you try. I can't wait to read the next book!

Beautiful nuanced characters

This is not a book I casually recommend because there are dark themes. That said, I was so delighted to discover such a well crafted story with nuanced characters. The older detective has relatable challenges for a woman in a male dominated field approaching the end of a distinguished career. The nonlinear storytelling was used masterfully to hint at the town’s secrets. Even when you figure out one piece, there is another to discover. I will definitely be continuing this series. I enjoyed the narration, with good pronunciation of the Italian and German names and places.

One of the best books I've read!! Get ready for a non stop page turner! Did not want to quit listening to this!! Wow!!!
